I'm intrigued by the idea of making a miniature out of clay or crafting it from other materials. I saw this package of Model Magic at Wal-Mart for around $5 so I bought it with the intention of giving it a test run. It has sat on my shelf for a month or more and curiosity finally got the best of me last night. I opened up one of the small packages and started messing around with the clay. After a few moments, I decided to go with something like a Gelatinous Cube or Green Slime because there isn't a lot of detail or precision involved. Basically, I just needed something vaguely cube shaped; as always, my miniatures are for effect rather than display or competition. I remembered that I had some left-over bits and bobs from some Warhammer pieces sitting around so I added them to the clay to represent parts of one or more unfortunate adventures that haven't been fully dissolved at this point. I'm waiting on the clay to dry completely before I paint it to see the results. Admittedly, it's a rush job and a test run BUT it was easy enough to do that I could just take longer and pay more attention to improve it the next time. Final results coming soon...

Here's some progress on my Gelatinous Cube/Green Slime or whatever it winds up being. It's feeling a little more solid but it's probably going to take another 24 hours or so to harden up really solid. I added some color and messed with the remnants of the victims. I still need to paint those parts. Here's what I have so far...

I like the DIYness + the instant recognizability. Very nice.

That's going to look really good. I wish I could think of something that would give you the semi-transparent effect. You go have a couple of figures sticking out of it and a skeleton and a couple of swords in the middle of it.

Could request clear or smoky-clear types, irregular shape, then apply some translucent paint. Maybe that would do it?

You go have a couple of figures sticking out of it and a skeleton and a couple of swords in the middle of it. There most definitely IS a way to do exactly what you are talking about. Serious model and terrain builders use some sort of clear epoxy like substance that they can add color to when they create a stream or river in a piece of scenery. You mix it up and pour it into the riverbed and let it dry. It looks awesome because it does wind up really looking like clear water that you can see into. That's what I would like to do some time so I could create several sizes and have different colors to represent different members of the cleanup crew. Unfortunately, I have no idea what that stuff is called and how much it costs OR what kind of mold I need to use that will allow me to remove it without any issues. Haha...I don't even know where to buy that stuff. Maybe Hobby Lobby or somewhere similar? I just happened to be walking through Wal-Mart and saw this modeling clay in a small package for $5. I figured $5 was a reasonable risk. I still have 3 or 4 little packages left to play around with and see if I want to continue using this stuff. If I do, they have a tub that contains 3 or 4 times the amount of the $5 package for only $10. Very reasonable if I am happy with the results.

I dig it!! "Daddy, why are you altering a gem to make it look like a dangerous blob?" "Hush, this is important..."

A little more progress but I'm still not quite finished. I slightly modified some of the pieces sticking out of the cube and began painting them. In addition, I added some splotches of a new red paint I bought called "Abomination Gore" to show a little bit of blood at the points the body part was dissolved from. It's coming together pretty good. Better than I thought.

And now it's complete. I sealed the miniature, and I was a little concerned at first because it looked "dirty" with some brownish smudges. When it dried it worked out to be to my liking. I think it looks like the dirt that would be picked up by a slimy creature in a dungeon environment. It gets the point across, and it was pretty cheap to make. I may try another homemade miniature in the future, but I need to brainstorm some ideas. A foul creature, but a very successful mini. Nice work! Plus it's totally homemade!

It turned out better than I imagined it would. Next time, I'm going to try clear silicone with a touch of color so it's still clear. Then I'll add the pieces inside so they will be trapped. I just have to figure out a mold that can be removed without messing up the silicone. Who knows when?

You know, for the kids? Hey, I think I had a unicorn setting somewhere...
