(TRoMF = The Roots of Modern Fantasy) Another author that predated Tolkien and who really (along with other authors) defined fantasy before Tolkien in some ways limited the scope of modern fantasy (unintentional on his part of course). You may read "The Griffin and the Minor Canon" here. He also wrote a wonderful story called "THE LADY, OR THE TIGER?"which you may read here. The sequel to "THE LADY, OR THE TIGER?" was called "The Discourager of Hesitancy" a continuation of "The Lady, or the Tiger?" and you may read it here. All three of these stories are a great resource of ideas for D&D. The Discourager of Hesitancy always appears sooner of later IMC when a decision-challenged player bogs down the game.

"The Lady, or The Tiger" was in one of my mothers high school literature books and I first read it when I was about 7 years old. I then ran across "The Griffin and the Minor Canon" about 20 years later. But I didn't read the "The Discourager of Hesitancy" a continuation of "The Lady, or the Tiger?" until about 20 years ago. I have read them many times and enjoy them greatly every time.
Some of the words he uses are no longer in common use, so I thought I would post a few of the least common.
semified - cut in half
barleycorn - 1/3 of an inch, the length of a grain of barley
ingrafted - fastened
epithalamic - celebrating a wedding
moiety - portion
reveries - daydreams

"The Griffin and the Minor Canon" is a unique take on the Griffins that I have used IMC a few times over the years. Using the griffin as a very intelligent and principled creature can be a lot of fun and can really throw a party for a loop when they are used to the way that they are normally played.

Frank R Stockton is awesome, would have loved it if he had done a fantasy novel.
