How do you define Classic D&D? You can select up to 10 answers. Explain your answer - appreciated.

IMO OD&D, the supplements and Holmes are the real deal and they predate Classic D&D and are overall (even Holmes) much less well known. B/X, BECMI and the Rules Cyclopedia are what is called Classic D&D and is what most people think of as Classic D&D because they either never knew about OD&D or vaguely knew, but did not understand the difference. The AD&D line is completely separate from OD&D and Classic D&D.

I agree. I think Classic D&D is most often thought of as B/X, BECMI, and Rules Cyclopedia.

I agree as well, this is the correct way to look at it IMO.

This is all new to me, but it is looking pretty clear.

This is all new to me, but it is looking pretty clear. Looks good, but I really don't know enough yet to have an opinion, at least not an informed opinion.

Those three are classic D&D and it is completely different from OD&D.

Never thought about this, until I saw this thread. Me to, I agree that you cannot place OD&D and "B/X, BECMI and the Rules Cyclopedia" in the same category, they are completely different. And that AD&D and later are not Classic in any sense of the word.

I don't think anyone disagrees about this. OD&D should have been the only Classic D&D, but when people have been using it wrong for B/X and later all these years, it is way too late to fix the error.
