I don't share this opinion. I was never able to get into the movies. Everything I like in the book was gone and I have little appreciation for the visual elements that the movies did well.

Seriously, I enjoy both for different reasons, but the original book is far superior.

Seriously, I enjoy both for different reasons, but the original book is far superior. I envy people who enjoy the movies. I love not only the book but also many elements of the story and would be happy to see even a wild very unfaithful (in some ways) adaptation. That I don't enjoy the movies much is not an indictment of those who do or the work that went into them.

Movies always have to leave some things out or combine characters or do other things because of time constraints.

Even being very faithful to the plot does not guarantee a good movie! The makers have to do the work of really adapting it to the medium, not just cutting and adding dialogue.

Right on, hengest. Different mediums require different approaches. You hit the nail right on the head.
