Is there anything like this among the "indy" games that have been popular in the last 15 years or so? I'm not aware of anything.
Not that it's quite the same as the subject of this board, but I do like having a degree of sword and sorcery around in popular culture. To my memory, it was strong in the 80s and still around in the 90s. Apart from the Tolkien movies, it seems to have faded in the 21st century. Although I admit I could be wrong.

hengest I can't think of an indy game fitting your criteria ;this is worth pursuing further. I believe Heroscape would have been cool if it would've continued. I believe it was around no more than 15 years ago.
