Action Comics #283. Art by Curt Swan. Just imagine, you row to an island with your buddy and the woman you work with who doesn't really like you, and you find there a crude statue of your alter ego made out of glowing red rocks that can cause bizarre things to happen to your body... Maybe there's nothing so striking about this cover, maybe the composition is a bit flat...but it sure gets the central idea across. This attractively bizarre idea was written by Robert Bernstein (I think).

From one of the old, old issues of Plastic Man, probably the early 40s. According to a blog, this is the first time readers see Plastic Man himself.

Kirby and Wood. Sky Masters. July 1, 1959. Did these guys really just hand their work in, collect their pay, and move on to the next bit? I guess that's what you do when you're a super-skilled artist... The Perilous Dreamer Do you remember Sky Masters?

I am not sure what you mean? Do you mean ham radio? Yes, I just asked because you said the ham girl in the panels above was your kind of girl! I thought maybe you were a ham from way back and I just never knew.

I thought maybe you were a ham from way back and I just never knew. No, I've never done ham radio, but I have an uncle who is really into it for the last 50 years, so if I had some money to invest (and time) he would be here to teach me everything he knows. But I really don't want to devote the time to it to get past the learning curve. Had I gotten into it young, it would be a thing, but now I just have to decide what I really want to do and focus on those things.

What I meant about my kind of girl was two things: one is her attitude and the other is her knowing what she wants and going for it.

I love her parents outfits, that look like they're from some kind of pre-war high society, and she's here with her rig and her cool, modern haircut receiving radio signals.

It's really cool, and comes in handy when there is a disaster, because it depends only on power supplies for two tiny units, zero other infrastructure required. I admire the people who take it seriously, a good hobby that can also turn into a public service when it's needed.
