This is just a thread of fleshed out ideas for new magic items. As usual, any and all feedback is appreciated.
Key of Unlocking A key that will open any normal lock on a door or chest. A Key of Unlocking resembles a standard key with a few differences. The bow is typically solid with 2 small gems in the center and the bit is just a very small nub protruding down from the pin. Upon inserting this key into a lock, an observant character will notice one of the gems starts to glow. When the second gem lights up the key can be turned, and the lock will now open. This process usually takes one round. A typical key of unlocking can be used for 2+1D6 locks. There are rumors of more powerful keys that will open more locks or even magical locks.

What do you think? I like that, it reminds me a bit of the flavor of the AD&D DM's manual. I try to avoid defining items to that degree myself (although maybe sometimes I do it anyway), but that's just my choice for my stuff, not because I dislike it. It locks up the item (and lets the user know it's used up), but in a way, it still leave the "door open": can it ever be removed? By magic? By someone else? Would magically locking the door eject it? Is the metal fused to something in the lock? How exactly is it stuck? And so on...

I think that may be the way to go. I want a sign but I don't want to have to answer those questions.
