Hope this isn't against the purpose of this subforum. I am attracted to the idea of using non-minis, more like counters, in place of minis. Have considered: - fasteners from the hardware store (nuts and so on)
- dried beans
- coins
- large beads
- homemade unique items (beads on a ring-sized thread to denote a specific PC, easily made unique)
- shrinky-dinks on stands with homemade designed colored onto them
Maybe this defeats the purpose of minis. I don't know.

hengest I think that's a great idea and definitely falls within the parameters of this area of the forums. Some people don't want to use miniatures, or props that they have to work on to paint or assemble before play. You listed some great suggestions. There's nothing wrong with grabbing a few bags of random junk to use as markers, characters, monsters, etc. Go for it! You can find beads similar to these Pente beads at Wal-Mart and the Dollar General. I believe they are just over a buck for a bag.

Not IMO!

I haven't bought any in a while, but they were on one of the aisles between the fabrics and electronics BEFORE they changed the store layouts this last time. 😬

hengest Here's something I stumbled across that fits in with the idea of this thread. I've always like Purple Worms, Carrion Crawlers, etc. in my games. I ran across this video by DM Scotty that shows how to craft a Purple Worm out of cardboard, toothpicks, a small amount of molding clay, and some paint. The Purple Worm in the video is 5E in style but I'm just going to follow the concept. My worm is going to be old school like the picture below.

This is totally awesome, thanks for following up on this thread, and I sort of see what you mean, but what do you mean about OS / 5E in style? Just that the 5E worm looks "edgy" and you want your worm to have a simpler, streamlined look?

The older illustration was a round, somewhat bulbous sectional body while the newer illustrations appear to be segmented and armor-like in their structure. Both are fine and both are cool. I just prefer the older illustration.

Sometimes the tendency now is too illustrative, too over-rendered for my taste.

I would have dug a set of 3E books done in a similar fashion to the original AD&D books.

I had to go buy some dog treats and as I was going down the pet aisle, I spotted this piece of aquarium scenery. I didn't buy it - only $7.50 - but it could be used as a barrow-wight mound, a hut, root cellar, burial mound, or something else.

I love the idea of a DIY / MIY unprofessional-but-cool setup like that. We'll see if I ever get around to doing it, or if it would evne look good if I did...

I have some of those inserts from the inside of coffee pot, microwave, and similar boxes. You can turn them upside down, paint them, and use them as a military bunker, outpost, etc. in a science fiction game. That's just a quick example. There's a ton more uses.
