In an effort to keep from derailing the thread that holds this post, I'm posting this here, where it will bother no one. Perhaps in time, I will use this thread to post more about flowers with game ideas. What I wanted to say on the other thread, in response to the talk about knowing or not knowing flowers and plants (me, The Perilous Dreamer , and The Semi-Retired Gamer ), is that there was a 19th-century poet, John Clare, who was an agricultural laborer. He knew tons of birds, flowers, trees, everything that I don't know. And there's a poem or fragment about a flower whose name even he didn't know. The first three stanzas: You can read the rest here, starting on page 127. A very beautiful idea, the familiar but nameless flower. The idea is further developed after what I have quoted, but that final stanza above is, to me, remarkable.

Also from John Clare, in a letter about John Keats,
How often is this the case for me? What my 'fancy' tells me things should or could be like rather than what they are like. Of course, for fantasy gaming, I suppose it's a different story, but still, my fantasy is based on an impoverished knowledge of reality.

Dog RoseFound in places once cultivated, but now returned to the wild, the dog rose is regarded as a sign of buried treasure or vanished cities.

Topic-related but not necessarily on topic. Hopefully, this is seen as a side quest and not a derailing of the thread. I always dug the reagents used in the Ultima game series. Early on it was just another item to pick up but later games had cool illustrations in the instruction manual and really added to the atmosphere of the game. Pictured below are Mandrake Root and Nightshade but there are six more: Black Pearl, Blood Moss, Garlic, Ginseng, Spider Silk, and Sulfurous Ash. Cool! And I think a thread called "flowers" can be safely derailed!
