(Hat tip to The Semi-Retired Gamer for bringing this up and posting another clip.) This movie is from what I think of as the heyday of fantasy in film, surely on the coattails of Tolkien and the then-faddish and continuing success of D&D. I'm sure Excalibur is not a perfect film to a lot of people, but to me, it's pretty much perfect as an on-screen dream. Even though you know these actors and can see that they're on sets, somehow, the whole production strikes a balance between "myth" and "real people" that makes the whole thing extremely engaging. I would love to watch this again sometime. I remember that when I was a kid, this movie seemed almost impossible. I think I saw it on VHS on a summer afternoon, and when it was over, the sunlit real world just didn't seem like it could exist at the same time as the movie. For everyone who's seen it: what do you remember well? Do you remember the first time you saw it? How did it strike you? Now this is magic represented in a movie:

Now this is magic represented in a movie: I am rarely conscious of sets being involved in films, I seem to be able to tune completely out from that.

The Perilous Dreamer That's good, shows you are able to be engaged. Usually I am, but not always anymore. Anyway, I think here the sets pop and grab my attention because the material is so unbearably mythical that anything of the modern world really stands out. It only shows how successful the movie is.

My Fav part of this movie is Merlin. He is so cool , I'never seen the actor in anything else. The movie looks stunning but it is a little slow and long.Over all I give it a B_

Lightning strikes a nearby tree and Merlin says with some surprise "Yes the Dragon is very much like lightning!" and of course the brief presence of Patrick Stewart swinging a sword and looking like he was having a grand old time.

The Semi-Retired Gamer I know, right? I wish someone had given me this to listen to when I was a kid. I would probably speak and read better now!
