This is for any OOC chatter about the Sunflower play-test (if anyone is inclined to talk). All desired topics about or surrounding the game are appropriate for this thread.

If I'm going to do this seat-of-pants, we're just going to ride right into it. Here we go.

I am really liking what I am seeing. Good to hear that, thank you for saying so. Awesome! Never having done any pbp gaming, I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm enjoying it a lot. Of course, it's slower than face to face but that's not really a disadvantage at all. This is cool.

Something else I'm really enjoying about the experience is that - and I always worry about sounding like a stick in the mud - there's actual roleplaying. I'm not trying to act like it's an audition or anything like that, but it hasn't been "I attack", "I pick the lock", "You see a town", etc. All those statements have a time and place but I'm glad it's not EVERY single post. I tried to play with some guys in the Army and it was literally just those statements all night long and every encounter - from shop keeper to otherwise - was just kill, kill, kill.

Yeah, that would be no fun for anyone, I think. Without the energy of interaction at the table, I assume you need a bit of this stuff for atmosphere and to get into it a bit. In fact, I'm worried there may not be enough lock-picking and killing! But overall, I'm trying not to worry too much about it. I'll do it as well as I can, and if someone cares to tell me what I could be doing better, I can listen. Very glad it's to your liking so far.

That gets old in a hurry IMO, I like the interaction of PCs and NPCs in the world I create. Combat is not the focus, it happens now and again, but it is not the focus or the reason for the game. I think that is part of why I find the murderhobo trope so offensive.

If you like that, no problem, but I don't know why you need a ref or other players, it seems like that kind of game is better played as a first-person shooter in invincible mode.

I see it as pointless and even first-person shooter in invincible mode would not be fun to me. Seems to me that after a few times through it would have to get mind numbingly boring. I like Civilization III where I put the game on the highest level of difficulty where the computer cheats in a number of ways and then I build a scenario where I try to balance the human character with the computer players. You can easily set it up for an easy win, but that is not worth the time it takes to do it.

For some people things are too hard (I mean people in really insane dire circumstances) and for some things are just too easy. I agree, I am not into first-person shooters at all, but if you wanted that kind of invincible ego game, why would you need someone to ref? Why use dice? The computer can give you dummies to destroy all day.

I mean if that appeals to you, then get a game where you are Superman and there is no Kryptonite and no magic.

I am impressed by how much the film Frozen avoids this, despite having one of the protagonists have what would be, in any setting, world-class effortless magic. But that's for the other thread, if I ever get back to it...

The Semi-Retired Gamer Some things you might try are proceeding further down the alley, seeing about the windows (light or dark), or going back to see what is going on in the main street. Or anything else you care to do, of course!

Well, it's officially in: running this play-test is the most fun thing I do every day. That's why I have been responding so much. This is an absolute blast! I was wondering if I was every going to game again because I've had such rotten luck in the past with face-to-face groups. I had a few errands to take care of on this unscheduled day off, so I slowed down earlier today but I'm getting ready to respond to the active thread. You're rocking this game hengest and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes!

The biggest problem about finding a group around here is that EVERYBODY wants to do 3E, Pathfinder, or 5E. I stress there is nothing wrong with those games BUT that's way more tracking and number crunching than I want to do.

And I have to say, it wouldn't be going 1/10 as well if I hadn't taken The Perilous Dreamer's seat-of-pants advice to heart! You really can make a sandbox and have it work. And for me, PbP is the perfect way to test it out.
