Some of you who have kids or grandkids (or are young) or for any other reason may be familiar with the 2013 Disney feature film, "Frozen."
No particular spoilers here, I think.
I'll be up front and say that while I think there are flaws, I do like the movie, particularly certain parts of it.
What I want to say is that it's an interesting example these days of a story kind of "winging" magic.
One of the central characters has a kind of inborn sorcerer magic, the ability to create and control snow and ice. In RPG terms, what she demonstrates would have to be world-class magic in nearly any system or setting.
Although it's interesting, her magic is not really used as any kind of deus ex machina. If anything, accidental use of it in fairly small ways starts the plot and later complicates the plot. The "superpower" part of it that we see is basically defensive or an externalized version of the character's emotional state.
So it seems noteworthy to me that, although the power is hardly defined verbally within the story for us, it doesn't get "abused" by the character or the writers. The best parts of the movie just allow you to accept this as a part of the character, not a spell list or skill set that needs to be checked every thirty seconds.
Maybe some of you have seen the movie and want to comment, or maybe someone will want to talk about defining powers and abilities in RPG terms, something like that.

My children saw this in the theater on a field trip, so I got to see it there also. I haven't seen it in years, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the film. I'm intrigued by your thoughts and would like to hear more. Maybe I will pull this out and watch it again so I can contribute?

I wouldn't call it a perfect film, but I too was surprised at how much I liked it. When I saw the character designs on various toys over the past nine years, I thought "This is definitely terrible," but I was surprised to find it wasn't. Depending on where the thread goes, we can always move it later.

I want to say something, maybe it will help me to get more thoughts in order later.
There are flaws (to my taste) in this movie, but I won't focus on them. And overall I do quite like the movie (I am not familiar with the rest of the franchise, the mini-features, the second movie, anything like that).
SPOILERS, I guess...
***
There are two emotional "knots" (high points, whatever) in the movie. One, associated with the popular song "Let It Go," is a sequence in which one of the protagonists is humiliated in public by an accidental reveal of her powers and flees alone into the mountains, deciding just to be alone and not worry about appearing to behave properly (to hide her magical talent) anymore. Personally, I don't love the lyrics to the song, although the sequence is quite memorable and effective.
The other, which anyone who has seen the movie will know before I say it, is a little hard to describe. Suffice it to say there's a kind of sacrifice that only works because of a prior injury done by the party whom the sacrifice is supposed to save. It's too complex in terms of plot really to describe easily and neatly, but emotionally and dramatically, I think it's clear enough for a child to understand. I think that's a remarkable thing, regardless of whatever faults the movie has.

Have not seen this, but hengest you are making me want to see it. It is definitely a movie intended for a younger audience (kids), but the best of it has held the attention of at least this adult for a couple months now. I don't know how Disney usually works and I am not a huge fan of a lot of their animated movies, but it sounds like for this one, they really let the creative people be creative and built a movie around that.

Usually anything good is when the suits take two or three steps back.
