I used to try to detail EVERYTHING I could think of on my map but I'm starting of small and going outward this time. This map represents the starting town. It is right by a river. Down in the lower SE is a mine and in the upper NW are some old ruins. There are plenty of options for a low level party to explore. The RuinsIs it an old Wizard's Tower? An old outpost? Is it REALLY abandoned OR is that just camouflage for a complex beneath? The TownSome basic details include a market area, some local religions, taverns, rumors, important figures, etc. The MineIs it still in use? If not, why was it abandoned? More ideas to follow...Attachments:

Old Wizards Tower If you are in the area you might see lights at the top of the tower in the wee hours and not abandoned, it is camouflage for a complex beneath.
Town is an active place and stop on a caravan route.
Mine is still in use, but the miners have been ill at ease as of late. Sometimes when they go back down in the mine things seem to have been moved or tampered with.

Since there is river access that would help with trade and I also envisioned it as a stop on a caravan route. I like your ideas for the mine; short and to the point. I was trying to come up with too much story. Simple and the easy. I dig it.

More thoughts and ideas on world info...
In Town The Bloody Claw is the tavern where the shady people hang out in the rough part of town. There are, of course, other taverns in town but this one is your best chance for black market items, etc.
Important figures in town include the mayor, constable, and the various guild leaders. There are a few guilds in town that offer training and membership services.
The town square will have a bulletin board, market place, and other offerings.
In addition to the typical religious orders in larger civilized areas, there will also be a group in town for The Cult of Grax; basically, the religion of the evil deity.
More to come...

The Bloody Claw, what a great name for a tavern. Interested in learning which guilds those are. BTW what (one or more things) is mined in the mine? Are there any other local trade commodities? How big is the river? Since it is navigable, does it also have good fishing? The surrounding area in each direction, plains, hills (mining), forests, mountains, etc. Population? Other smaller towns in the area? Many villages surrounding the smaller towns? Farming? Hunting? How far to real wilderness? Perhaps the area right around and beyond the Ruins?
