I'm still trying to figure out backgrounds, can you help?
This character might be fun to play, though he's probably not very likeable.
Aristocrat, strong and dextrous but below average endurance. Not a lot smarter than domestic animals, but still educated beyond his intelligence.
Army Trooper Baron Bo Watanabe C9536C Age 22
1 term Cr2,000
Skills: Rifle-1, Sword-1
Service History:
Attempted to enlist in Army.
Enlistment accepted.
Denied reenlistment after first term.

Army Trooper Baron Bo Watanabe C9536C Age 22 1 term Cr2,000 Skills: Rifle-1, Sword-1 Service History: Attempted to enlist in Army. Enlistment accepted. Denied reenlistment after first term. Here is a suggestion. Bo hated the social whirl and politics of being a Baron. He was perfectly happy to let his uncle run things for him. Uncle Eneri, first in line to the title, loved that sort of thing and was happy helping him out. At his uncle's suggestion Bo decided to do something completely different. So, when he turned 18, he joined the Army. Turns out he hated Army life, too! There wasn't nearly enough fighting, too much red tape and structure, and way too much "yes, sir" and "no sir" to everybody he ran into. The whole affair finally blew up when he challenged his Sergeant to a duel over some slight or other. Bo almost killed him in a sword fight. Fighting with a sword was the one thing Bo excelled at growing up, not that the Army ever made use of that skill. It was by mutual agreement that he left the Army. He barely escaped a few years of prison for assaulting a superior. There are some advantages of being a Baron it seems. "No way Sergeant Toma is my superior in any form, shape or fashion!" Bo thought, but he was just smart enough not to say that out loud when he stood before Captain Smith at his administrative hearing. His first cousin, Uncle Eneri's oldest son and a Major in the Army, got him an invite to this mission shortly after he was booted from the Army. It sounded like an adventure, just what he was looking for! In Bo's mind, both Eneri and his son Major Watanabe were doing him a very good turn. It never occurred to him how much they had to gain if Bo went off somewhere and got himself killed. In the meantime, Uncle Eneri keeps sending him 1,000 credits every month for "living expenses as long as you're away from home." Bo generally wastes that money on wine, women and...gambling. He does enjoy a good game of chance, not that he wins often. Add Revolver-1 and change to Sword-3 in your skills as background for being a Baron. Bo is allowed to carry either his revolver or his sword (a double edged sabre) on any Romanian world because of his title. He will often wear both. How does that strike you?

I might suggest that if he is that low on the intelligence scale, that someone might have shifted the inheritance to someone else. Those in control likely make sure that people they know will fail won’t be put in charge. Same with the army. He could be a Lord like Eric. No real authority but all the prestige of being of the same social class as a baron. I’d also suggest not playing him as as dumb as a box of rocks. That would get irritating to those dealing with the fallout. And, just like the army, there would be pain.

How about this character?
Army Trooper Baron Bo Watanabe C9536C Age 22
1 term Cr2,000 Cr1000 per month provided he doesn't try to go home.
Skills: Rifle-1, Sword-3, Revolver-1
Service History:
Attempted to enlist in Army.
Enlistment accepted.
Denied reenlistment after first term.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
As the youngest son of a duke, Bo has the courtesy title "lord." Although he doesn't actually rule anything, it gets him into the good clubs.
Ancient family tradition sent younger sons into the clergy, academia or the military. Bo's best choice was pretty obvious. In perhaps the wisest decision he had made so far in life he refused a commission.
There are some advantages of being an aristocrat.
"No way Sergeant Toma is my superior in any form, shape or fashion!" Bo thought, but he was just smart enough not to say that out loud when he stood before Captain Smith at his administrative hearing.
"A fool and his money get invited to all the best parties." -- Dorothy Parker
Bo is not a fool, and he realizes that his monthly remittance of 1000 credits won't be enough to keep the invitations coming. He was considering piracy (another family tradition) when this opportunity presented itself.
Bo is allowed to carry either his revolver or his sword (a double edged sabre) on any Romanian world because of his title. He will often wear both.

Your character is between you and Eris, but I'll say that I think this works better. Man, Eric needs a remittance not to come home to go with his retirement pay.

Eris reminded me that Eric (my character) is still a baron but someone else is filling his seat and doing the work. I got confused. As I misspoke, I felt like I should clarify now that I have a better understanding. I say you keep the title and just let someone else be doing the work to keep things the way you rolled them. Whether we have titles or not, it's all the same on the ship. My character doesn't use his title, but your character undoubtedly has heard of him even if they've never met.
