Half-Elves are so called not because they come from unions of Men and Elves, although that may be their origin. They are called Half-Elves simply because from the perspective of Men, they seem "somewhat" elvish. Knowledge of and interaction with them goes back to before the destabilization of the world and the crash of the high Elven culture and longevity. Their name for themselves in their own tongue means "the slippery ones." It is unknown what Elves call them.
They are most visible and active at twilight, while Men tend to be diurnal and Elves nocturnal.
They have a set of abilities that, while apparently magical to Men, are unrelated to the abilities that Elves formerly had (and still have, to a degree).
Half-Elves are remarkably good at squeezing through tight spaces. The ability is not obviously magical but is quite surprising. No similarly-sized Elf or Man could do what they do. They can occasionally get terribly stuck, however.
In a fight, Half-Elves can enter a state of "gliding" in which they are all but unhittable but cannot attack their opponent. This is demoralizing and confusing for the opponent. The ability works less well against multiple opponents, especially with a coordinated attack.
Their settlements are also known to "glide" and are difficult for outsiders to enter. The mechanism and purpose of this (if there is any purpose) are unknown at present.
Culturally (speech, body language, melodic preferences), they seem somewhat closer to Men than to Elves. In facial appearance, they have their own Man-like look, neither quite like Men nor like Elves nor like a blend of them.
Half-Elves are often cold.
The races of Men, Elves, and Half-Elves are roughly the same height but differences in posture allow identification at a good distance.

Ha, I had no idea. I will check this out. If the Elf queen visits you, the world warps around here and the elven territory extends into your area, so your land may be in the middle of winter, but while the Queen is there it will be spring time, no snow, no cold, but flowers blooming etc.
