Adam worked many years for Delgado Trading, then left to Captain a free trader that was doing undercover work for Romanian Naval Intelligence. The RNI used the free trader to sniff out pirates/hijackers and such in part of their Empire. Even most of the crew aboard his ship never knew about his side job with RNI. They just knew their ship kept running into trouble with unsavory sorts..."just bad luck?"
Now, they want Adam to do the same sort of thing in the Mantan Sub-sector, which is beyond Romanian space. This time, though, Adam is part owner of the ship.

Otto has retired, but civilian life just doesn't seem to suit him. A contact in the Romanian Navy he had made a few years ago calls him and suggests he might fit into a "project" the Navy is putting together.
He would be part of a team aboard a Q ship trying to lure out and neutralize pirates/slavers/reavers in an area neighboring the Romanian Empire. There would be a team of former Army and Marines aboard a well armed ship posing as a merchant. The combat team would conduct boarding and ground combat actions in support of the ship's mission.
The idea of visiting new, unexplored, territory and fighting...something he has done his entire life...appeals to him, so he is prepared to sign on!
More history:
This character comes from a high gravity world size 4. At the age of 13 having completed the first 8 grades. So at 13 close to turning 14 he is shipped to an asteroid belt to work as a miner for the rest of his life, but is kidnapped during a pirate raid and made a pirate at the age of 14. He serves one term as a pirate from 14-17, during that time he is Promoted to Henchman.
Then just before he turns 18 he is captured with the adult pirates and when his age and ignorance are confirmed along with his forced pirate life he is given a choice of enlisting in the Army instead of prison. The adult pirates are executed. He accepts and is enlisted. Much of his Army service was on High Gravity Planets, due to his tolerance for higher gravity since he comes form multiple generations of high gravity stock.
Colonel Otto Heinrich Wolfgang Berger, not his original name, but the name he took when he was freed from the pirates in honor several different officers who spoke on his behalf and helped him get into the Army.
He is not fond of pirates to say the least.
