I am drawn to making a setup for an all-cantrip village that will fit in with my fairy tale material. The idea is that many, if not all, of the cantrips will be "village-appropriate." There is a touch more to the idea but I will post that later. For now I am just making a list of names. Some will have a "twist," like the recent "Catch a Fish" spell. If you want to contribute any ideas for cantrips (titles or more than titles), or tag in anyone else, I will credit you with tags on anything I use when I type up the whole thing. Ideas for the moment: Soothe Cowpox Dry Wood Recognize Change of Seasons Turn Soil Shout Get Bearings Landboat Waterstand Rest Anchor Court Other Herb Protection from Fay Summon Fay The Perilous Dreamer mao

If I am understanding you right, I think this is pretty cool.

Working on how to distribute spells as well, am considering reskinning them and doling them out in a different way, but for now am keeping the name cantrips. Thought you all might have more and better ideas than I do so you are welcome to throw ideas in there if you wish.

My idea though is basically classless. I still need to type it up, but the idea is that from a set of cantrip-like spells each native to the village will have a random number of cantrips they can use every so often. Some duplicate manual work, some have a twist, some may be more obviously "magical." I'm trying to get a set together like that. I can't really think in terms of class but just like with the backburnered Fairy Tale PC classes I was blown away by your ideas so sure, post whatever!

Soothe Cowpox Dry Wood Recognize Change of Seasons Turn Soil Shout Get Bearings Landboat Waterstand Rest Anchor Court Other Herb Protection from Fay Summon Fay mao Okay, I do still like this idea, but I have no idea what "Other Herb" was supposed to do, or why a farmer would need a cantrip to "Recognize Change of Seasons."

Ya got me on "Recognize Change of Seasons" unless there is something really odd about seasons on this world or maybe it is important to know the exact moment they change. Other Herb, you can change the Herb you find into the Herb you need.

El Borak Yes, that must have been the idea, switching out one herb for another, I can see how it could be useful. Maybe not the kind of power PCs like, but useful in a rural setting. Maybe for the "Change of Seasons" it assists with some kind of subtle phenomena, not just the fact of the change of seasons but to know when the frost is actually coming, when the last frost is, etc. Something like that.

That sounds like a great take on it to me. Knowing the date of the first or last frost is powerful in gardening. As for the kind of power PCs like, it is not bad to give them things that make them think. The whole switching herb things could be pretty useful. In a milieu where herbs are much used, always having the one you need is something special, especially if it is herbs and spices.

El Borak Yeah, if you could be sure of that (or something like it), would be really useful for subsistence (or other) farming and gardening. I like it. Agreed, no, not bad to give them things that make them think and interact with the wider context. In a combat context, "Change of Seasons" isn't going to stand up next to Fireball, but as part of a set of rural spells, players could find good uses for it. Reminds me of my poorly-defined project to make a set of spells useless for combat but very useful for interacting with the game world.
