2. Experience
I award experience for 5 things: - Treasure (the usual 1gp = 1XP - players decide who gets them)
- Magic items (I use the AD&D tables awarded to the character who gets the item)
- Monsters killed (10 XP for each hit point the monster has, divided among the characters taking part in the combat)
- Damage taken (10 XP for each hit point lost, awarded to the character who lost them)
- Quests (5%-10% of the character's current XP per character)
I find that the XP for damage dealt and HP lost really helps award the characters for the enemies that ARE hard to overcome, and especially award the players that take part in the combat. The idea is that combat is awarded, but to get a real benefit, the combat has to be hard.

XP for Gold, Silver, Copper, Gems, Jewels and stuff like that. But not for anything else.
