Helm of Awe (also Helm of Terror or Ægishjálmr), an Icelandic magical stave. A physical object called "Helm of Terror" is referenced as one item Sigurd takes from the dragon Fafnir's hoard after he slays him in the Völsunga saga. (Norse mythology).
The Poetic Edda also mentions:
The Helm of Awe
I wore before the sons of men
In defense of my treasure;
Amongst all, I alone was strong,
I thought to myself,
For I found no power a match for my own.
Effects of the Artifact: Whoever wears this Helm, causes fear and any creature of less than 8 HD will flee for two turns and will not return to battle unless rallied by a commanding and powerful leader. Creatures of 8 or more HD will fight at a -2 to all attacks.
