Normally when I post here I try to have my thoughts all collated but, in this case, it's more of a collection of various ideas only some of which have actually seen the game table. But here are my current thoughts as to rules for weapons.
These rules have three goals: Firstly, they need to be realistic, in that they encourage or represent how the weapons were used historically. Keep in mind that my game is more ancients than medieval. Secondly, the need to provide the players with interesting choices. No one weapon should be better all around than any other. And finally, I want these rules to be as efficient as possible. Providing the most of #1 and #2 in the minimum of rules. Note that my hit dice are d8s instead of d6s.
Normal Weapons: These weapons require 5' of space so two people with them can fight in a 10' corridor.
d8 damage: sword & battle axe (a one-handed axe)
d10 damage: two-handed sword, pole-axe, & various pole-arms such as a halberd.
Formation Weapons: These weapons only require 3' of space so three people can fight in a 10' corridor
d8 damage: spear (2H)
d6 damage: spear (1H), short sword, mace, hand axe, & warhammer
d4 damage: dagger
Special Rules:
Two-handed swords and shorter (5'-6') pole-arms can be used to fill the entirely of a 10' corridor to help block the enemy.
Daggers can be used as a formation weapon doing only d4 damage but they do d6 damage if used during a grapple.
The main jist of the rules is that the party can choose between two attacks at d8 damage or three attacks at d6 damage. Increasing the damage one die size if not carrying a shield.
