Has this ever been discussed on this board?
I recognize that advancement is one of the goals and fun parts of the game, but I also wonder if there's room for level-free play. It would be a major mechanical change but perhaps it would open up some fresh ideas while preserving the basic character of the game.
It would affect combat and spells. And hit dice.
I need to think about this more. Am weak on game mechanics. Meantime, please post thoughts or link to older discussions.

Not that I recall, but my first thought would be to look at Classic Traveller and rewrite D&D with that example in mind.

Why reinvent the wheel when there is Traveller to mine first. I find it a bit distressing to know there are ten million more ideas out there than I will ever get to play or even think about. But at the same time, it's an exciting thought.

I never noticed this before but you and I are polar opposites, your all about fluff and I am all about mechanics., we need to branch out into the others territory.( i see yours as the superior way.)This is probably why we think of each others stuff as great .

That's right, I try not even to think of mechanics, with a couple recent forays into it to stretch myself, as you suggested. One, I feel like I'm bad at it, two, I want my stuff to be edition-free and applicable to almost any game. Also I feel like I don't understand the mechanics of advancement or anything and that if I make a character class, it will be messed up or unplayable.

First off your crunch on the portal is perfect, I mean that sincerly. But how about this: WE collaborate on the fairy tale classes, You start I add the mechanics and then you edit me? I think it would be a great on going series in the fanzine. if you are interested I have thought of more. I was having trouble coming up w these but the flood gates around mao have all exploded.

Also I feel like I don't understand the mechanics of advancement or anything and that if I make a character class, it will be messed up or unplayable. I don't call it fluff myself, I call it atmosphere and world building. But yes, mechanics is something that should be in the background as much as possible and IMO ideally only the ref needs to know more than a few basic mechanics. Back in the 70s the group I played with never read or even asked to read the rule books. They did not even bother to memorize things like, "Oh a 12 hit that orc last time, it should this time too." They consistently just waited for me to tell them the result. Aside from to hit rolls and saving throws there was not a lot of dice rolls, some but not a lot.
