The story of the dragoness Tiamat comes from the Babylonian creation myths of the Enuma Elish. The Enuman Elish was a poetic writing on seven tablets found at the site of Ninevah in Iraq near the modern town of Mosul. Tiamat was the female spirit of salt water and chaos. Tiamat was the consort of Apsu.
Tiamat & Apsu had numerous children who became the "gods" and Apsu became enraged by them and sought to destroy them, but they killed him first. Tiamat wanted revenge and spawned eleven monsters to help her.
