A knothole that functions variously as a viewing portal, hiding place, locus of power, whatever. This thread is, for now, for ideas about what you may see or find when you look into the knothole.

1) What appears to be a woodpecker's nest. You see that one egg is just in the process of hatching. As you watch, you find your breath slowing down. You keep watching with interest, and see that the nest is speckled with tiny gems. Their number seems to be increasing as the egg hatches.
2) Simply the inside of a hollowed-out tree. The only surprise is that, a moment after you look in, a distressed human eye pops up to meet yours.
3) A dry knothole with two corked vials inside, small, barely enough to hold a swallow of liquid each. They are crudely labelled "WANT FRIENDS" and "NO FRIENDS."

4) A crude face sketched, apparently with a small dagger, in the back of the knothole. The scratches appear to be of various ages, as if the face has been renewed more than once.
5) An absolutely motionless but very alive-looking squirrel. You marvel at its stillness and then realize that not even your breath stirs its fur.

6) The detritus you would expect to find in a knothole. If you move your hand through the bits of twig and leaf, perhaps a years-old nest, you find a bit of rotting cord looped through a gold coin with a hole punched in it.
7) A knothole-sized snowdrift, cold in any season.

8) You feel warmth coming from the knothole, but when you reach you hand inside something wraps itself around your hand and it is cold, wet, slimy.
9) You get up close to look into the knothole, then you see two eyes, two angry eyes, then smoke puffs out of the knothole and you fall coughing to the ground.

10) As you look into the knothole, you are surprised to find it lined with sparkling crystals. It seems to be of a piece with the wood: looking closely, you can see at the edge of the knothole where one blends into the other.
11) A squirrel, almost too big to fit in the hole, hurls a small object at your face and hits you right between the eyes. You can hear his mad chatter as you turn away involuntarily.

12) As you examine the knothole closely, of a sudden, water starts to pour from it in a continuous stream. The water is cold, very cold, and you realize that you are sinking into the cold muddy ground.
13) You are looking into the knothole and then a large snake strikes from inside the knothole and you fall backwards on the ground and you realize you were bitten on the forehead and the blood is dripping into your eyes.

14) The knothole appears normal up to a certain depth, but at its back, there is something odd moving, as if in the open air. After a few moments of confusion, you realize it is the back of your own head as you peer into the hole. You wonder what will happen if you reach in and touch it.

15) You look through and see into a wood in which everything seems neatly outlined, discretely colored, and delicately shaded. The quickly moving elements stand out starkly against the background of the trees.
16) As you look into the ordinary knothole, you hear a few voices saying numbers under their breath.

17) You see water flowing from the knothole. Peering in, you see a tiny rocky beach with breakers crashing against it. There is a miniature ship a ways from shore, headed towards you.

18) An ordinary knothole, although a tiny face, animate, but part of the wood, looks over at you from where it sits on the right side of the hole.
19) As you peer close, sure that there is something interesting in there, the edges of the knothole reach out like a pair of trembling lips and either kiss or taste your face.

20) You see nothing special, but as you begin to draw away, the hole begins coughing, sending visible vibrations up and down the trunk of the tree.

21) You see five golden rings. If you put them all on the fingers of one hand, they sink into your flesh and vanish. Your vision seems sharper, almost too sharp.
22) There is a tiny door that covers the knothole. If you open it, you see the inside of a regular old knothole. But in the middle, hanging by the pulmonary artery and aorta, there beats a very human-looking heart.

23. You see this odd looking knothole and go over to take a look at it. Looking closely you see a small room full of little tiny 2 inch high people. As you look they notice you. One walks to the front and speaking to you holds out her hand to you. Reaching inside you offer your little finger and suddenly you feel like your finger is being crushed and you pass out. When you awake you are laying on the floor and a lot of people are standing around you, while a young lady kneels down to offer you a drink of a cold liquid.

Great and very suggestive addition to this thread. If I had gotten paid for a year to come up with these, I would never have come up with your #23. I might try to riff on it in a separate thread, with your permission. 24. Inside the large knothole, extending from the back of it, made of the same wood as the tree itself, not carved but obviously grown, is a humanlike hand, detailed but without fingernails, motionless but positioned as if for a handshake.

25) As you approach the tree, you see a blueish glint and imagine it must be some bird tucked away inside the trunk. Getting closer, you see that the interior of the knothole is completely covered with crystals of various colors. Staring into the bizarre formation, you touch the bark of the tree and find that it is just as real as it looks. You wonder what you might find if you snapped off a twig.
26) A small woven nest with an enormous cowbird chick staring back at you. This ungainly fowl is larger than most adult ravens.

27) A tiny crank set into the wood. If you turn it, the tree begins moving very slightly, creating a remarkable set of gentle melodies up at the edge of hearing with its leaves and branches.
28) A tremendous number of tree nuts. If you so much as touch one, they start pouring out.

29) Several warm and moderately wiggly teats of a cow's udder that more than fills the knothole.
30) Nothing but a starry night.
