Have You Created a Campaign World Completely From Scratch? Primary sources of inspiration are assumed, some deliberately obtuse (i.e. trolls) people try to claim that from Scratch means you had no previous exposures to any ideas or inspirational material. From Scratch means substantial creativity on your part putting a unique twist on your sources of inspiration. In other words you did not plagiarize someone else's complete body of work. Note: if you are using a published world and are not claiming you wrote it, then you are not plagiarizing.

I may snag a map from someplace, but the rest of it is my work.

80% -I have done it dozens of times. In reality if you are going to uses a RPG a lot have the world embedded in the rules. Like Battletech or Travaller. The only published that I use is Traveller"s Spinward Marches, prob my fav published setting.

I don't like most campaign settings. I draw inspiration from literature and maybe movies and old video games.

Just read my subforum here, it has almost everything I remember, Mysantia and stolen world are the real gems Yeah, you can mine his sub-forum for ideas for a long time. If you are stuck, just go read mao's stuff.

I have the same thing, most published campaign settings do not grab me, there is always too much I don't like about them. I like doing my own thing and I draw inspiration from almost anywhere.

Whole cloth for me too, it is too much trouble to try to fit modules into my world.

I think the published settings, specially GH and the FR have set a standard of how the game or a fantasy campaign should look like and most people seem to follow it. At the end of the day most games seem very alike. Not my thing.

I have never finished writing up and running a campaign world from scratch. I have ideas on paper. I usually use published products to start with and then put my own spin on them (from adventures, maps, worlds, and finally game systems). Ultimately, I try to follow M.I.F. (Make It Fun) and K.I.S. (Keep It Simple) principles.
