When you create a campaign setting, what do you do?

I start with Top Down to get the continents and major geographical features in place and then switch to bottom up as we play.

The 3rd option is the one that I use, but I think I take it top down a little further than you do. I like to layout some of the major cities and territories of what is where before the game starts.

Mine is all bottom up, most of the stuff at the top never comes into play and so it does not really matter.

Bottom up for me, I don't want to spend time building something the players don't care about.

I do both about equally, I suppose.

Bottom Up is about all I ever have time to do.

I do top down, probably because I have no players at this time and so I am trying to create a complete world, at least as complete as I can.

I start with Top Down to get the continents and major geographical features in place and then switch to bottom up as we play. As do I.

In my very limited setting design experience, I start with a trivial thing and try to build a ways out from there.

I used to try to do everything top down but that doesn't work as well for me. I usually do a few vague things from the top to get some bigger ideas on paper and then start small from the bottom and expand to where I feel like going. This usually allows me to work on an area until ideas for another area comes up and I rotate from area to area. This works for me best because I do my best work when I am working on several ideas at the same time but focusing on one in particular as inspiration comes.

I have to let the ideas marinate in my brain for a while & then it's off to the races.

Mostly bottom up, very little top down. Mainly small details, like the number of moons and stuff like that.

Top down for the background of the world and then bottom up for game play.
