I started with a 4th print (my friends) and made a trip from Athens to Columbus and snagged a 5th print. Added Greyhawk later on.

My first OD&D had halflings substituted for hobbits, it was only later I found out it is really hobbits.

2e, I ran the game. Although by the time I started 4e was around. I quickly tried Mentzer's Basic and Expert and then OD&D without supplements, my favourite system.

OD&D without supplements is my favorite, I like running it that way, especially for new to OD&D players. But then I also like adding to it once the players get experience at it. I am fond of Paladins and Rangers so, I house rule them in. But I think very, very few people run OD&D without the supplements, so that makes us the smallest niche of all.

I would guess that it is the 5th print, white box with hobbits.

A 6th print is what I started with. I eventually found out that it is hobbit, not halflings; ents, not treants; and balrogs, not balor.

I use the lbbs as a reference but wing most of it. Concerning the rules, I change and add much but always keep it simple. Rulings ad hoc always take precedence.

I think that is a very good way to go and IMO the most fun.

it was a first or second print, not sure. It was so wore out, that I had to make a copy of the tattered books.
