I'm devout Asatru, so I picked Norse but I don't really use Norse gods in my games... just the structure and function of the different planes of existence. I'm actually kinda uncomfortable with the idea of fictionalizing real-life gods, but my priestess does it in almost every game she gets the chance, so I pretend I'm okay with it.
I'm learning, here on this forum, that pretty much everything I hate about D&D was added specifically in AD&D and the AD&D campaign settings. Aside from Alignment (which isn't much of a big deal outside of AD&D and 3.X), one of my biggest ongoing problems is the nature of the gods, religion, divine magic, worship, and the way the game rules assume those things are related.
So I definitely answered Mentzer's Immortals, which avoid all of the problems I have, have absolutely terrifying implications if you think about them for a few minutes, and offer a tantalizing reward for high-level PCs to keep pushing their luck.
I also picked REH and ERB, for their ideas about what "Earth" should look like in sword & sorcery, and how the rest of the "solar" system should be when you leave "Earth". I'm not going to say that every fantasy setting or fantasy game should have a weird, populated solar system, but playing D&D the way I want to play D&D absolutely requires it. Spelljammer is my favorite AD&D boxed set... but I mostly use it as a rulebook and build my own Crystal Spheres.
And, of course, I picked both "homebrew" options... because that's what I do with all of this lovely Appendix N material.

My areas of study were the UK and China That seems to be an odd choice, how did you arrive at those two? I went to Wm. Patterson university and it had a small history department. My instructor in Chine was Dun J Lee, prob the formost authority on Chinese History. My one 400 Level choice was Irish History and my big project was a scientific look at the potato. Also I am 3 credits short of a minor in African american studies because I took 4 semesters of Karate. Not much else to pick from.
