I would love to see TPD's take on this, what I remember is the Two Axis Alignment System (Law/Chaos, Good/Evil) and the Bard class. The Bard class is notable for being two things - a bloated unOD&Dlike monstrosity and being grossly overpowered compared to everything else at the time. Much of the writeup for the Bard is more suited to a novel or something that a better version of grows up organically during a compaign.

I intend to get back to this, although I don't know how soon that will be. I agree with you about the Bard.

Wow.
I'll go so far as to agree that modern-day so-called players have no clue as to what constitutes a Bard, but the class presented here is the worst example of overpowered I've ever seen, as I've read White Dwarf magazine a few times.
The Bard here is basically a nerfed cleric/(druid?) that can Charm instead of turn undead, and then only once per level per day, where as Clerics have no such limit on turning undead in general. There are also HD stipulations to resist this effect, which could be likened to the degree of difficultly to turn tougher and tougher corpsey-types.
Sure, he gets thief skills, sorta ... but at a rate only half as good as a thief. There's a smattering of darned obscure magic items he gets some benefits from, but there's lots of darned common magic items he can't use too. But - he gets a Lore ability, which could be pretty darned handy, but I don't know how overpowering that is.
One could argue that his spell casting ability is the tipping point, but honestly this is really the only thing going for the class without a hitch - unless a Referee requires the Bard to cast his spells through song or music or something like that ... which I'd be inclined to implement ...
Still, though ... this guy is more overpowered than a Paladin or a Ranger? I don't see it.
