I would love to see TPD's comments on this issue.
The two main things IMO were the introduction of Illusionists as a magic-user subclass, although IMO they are a pretty lame subclass and the Ioun Stones, which are just an awesome magic item.

I intend to get back to this, although I don't know how soon that will be. I agree with your two points.

Illusionists lame?! Tsk, tsk ... this is a tough room... Phantasmal Forces at first level is the gateway to some of the most imaginative magic-using characters I've ever seen. Take another look at the first level spellbook/list; extremely useful things contained therein. Such 'Phenomenal Cosmic Power' is also pretty evenly 'balanced' (I despise that concept, but I get it ...) with attribute requirements and more XP to level. (As far as supplement classes go, is it weird that I think Rangers are overrated Aragorn-clones and Paladins are WAY too common in this scene? Just an opinion, like any other, I suppose. ... )

I just don't like Illusionists and I am very fond of the offensive spells of a standard OD&D Magic-User.
