Like a Floating Disk tripping people or a spell to make the ground slippery, etc? Some of this feels more S&S but also makes the magic user more dependent on support from fighters. Even things like the various walls just set boundaries on the battlefield, and Bless and Protection (well, those are largely clerical, but still) spells are useful but not directly applicable. I definitely feel that spells like Evard's Black Tentacles are more atmospheric than throwing a fireball or lightning bolt, too. I guess yes, along these lines. I should look at S&S again. All ideas welcome, but I was thinking of a system with magic present but really low-utility in combat. I suppose for many this would spoil the fun of combat. I'm just thinking out loud: what would a system look like with MUs who were useful but rarely useful in combat?

Posted an unusual (for me) creative attempt on ironnerd's forum here. I had a real good time taking inspiration from the BECMI flavor of that forum and letting it run through my usual brainstorming habits.

I liked that mouse idea! And it all came from an online dice roller and the tables you posted! Your thread on alignment and languages over at your BECMI forum really has me thinking. Maybe not quite along the same lines, but at least thinking. If I post anything that comes from these thoughts, I'll link over to that thread.

Puzzle:
game without HP.
Can there still be risk of death (and therefore, character fragility, tension, a sense of risk, and so on) without this mechanic?
Can there still be player engagement and immersion without this mechanic?

Question:
is there an ideal degree of PC "grit" (ability scores, skills, etc.)?
Or an ideal range of "grit" / "crunch"?

Notes:
The world we live in is in fact largely incomprehensible to us, and a game setting full of mystery is actually more like regular life than we might expect.
Our experiences are largely mediated by technology but technology is basically irrelevant to the experiences themselves. Technology acts only as an extension or booster for basic human capacities, largely sensory and mechanical. Emotional and intellectual capacities are largely untouched by technology, except as mediated through the senses.
My habits of imagination are only minimally sensory. Vision is a kind of fog, only a general sense of placement. No hearing, no smell unless I force it in, no touch, no taste.

Much of the material in this subforum is strange events, people, items, places that seem otherworldly or like they are in some kind of border space between worlds.
A game setting cannot have only that sense of mystery. Something has to be familiar as well. It doesn't have to be crude and rude, but it should feel familiar and at least potentially real-world real.
So we need connections between what feels familiar (despite being fiction or fantasy) and what feels attractive, border-like, faerie-like, mysterious, truly magic.
Can there be a way to generate connection-types between the regular and the otherwordly? Is a meta-table of this type doable?

I think most of them are based on a simple idea: isolating the strange from the usual mix of strange and spooky, and trusting that something slightly strange will jog the imagination of anyone who chooses to run it. Now, does that actually cover all my posts? And is there another idea I can run with for a while?

Can there still be player engagement and immersion without this mechanic? I think you could run it without HP, a lot of things can be removed and hidden. It is all about trusting the referee to be fair. I can describe the health of your character and not use HPs.

Don't try to overthink it, just jot down your ideas as they come to you.

Here I am again, on my journal thread. I have been busy and exhausted, dealing with this and that. But am trying to get my act together again...

El Borak good idea, I asked him about that. Otherwise...I'm at one of those times when I have been able to post a fair bit but my energies are not really marshalled. This is always my problem. I feel like these hooks and things are not bad. If only I knew how to write and sell a fantasy novel! Hm...

(Going to try to aim for ten a day for a month, allowing myself to work ahead but not fall behind. Can I make it work as a discipline without losing the bit of creativity I have going? We will see. I don't imagine this is important to anyone but me, am doing this purely to encourage myself to post and push myself to think is new ways, not to post mindlessly.)

Admin Pete I know what you mean. I am at my best in interacting with people in the few areas where I am semi-competent. I have trouble arranging such meetings, though, since I'm competent in a narrow set of things and there just aren't that many people who are even interested. This board is a notable exception. ironnerd Will do, thank you!
