I have been mostly offline the past few days for several reasons, one is everything going on in the world, one is a drive by shooting that happened less than 40 yards from my front door, fortunately no one was hurt, although another neighbor was walking with her child and were about 20 feet away (but not in the line of fire) when the bullets started flying. I grew up around guns and you immediately know it is not firecrackers. Thirdly, I was also getting some tests to hopefully verify that I do not have cancer for the fourth time.
The cat scan looked pretty good, but they could not do the visual because scar tissue was stopping the probe, but the little bit they could see was something they want to biopsy. To do that is going to require minor surgery to stretch the scar tissue, do one or more biopsies based on what they find and remove and cauterize each possible item and, of course, put me under anesthesia to do it. That is going to be expensive and out of pocket as I am one of the uninsured until I turn 65 with Medicare, so we have to figure out how we can make that happen. So, you know, just another dull ho-hum week of an old guys life.

It makes me sad to hear this.
I've been reading your blog these last weeks from beginning to end (I'm already in Januray 2020) and I've enjoyed a lot. The fact that I've come that far shows, I guess. Anyway, with that I wanted to say that, to some extent reading the thoughts of someone, even if it's mainly, but not only, about gaming, makes you develop some kind of feeling that you know that person to some extent.
I'm going to pray for a good resolution and a pront revovery. I hope you only will get good news from now on.

I do not know about other authors or posters, but I hope my writing is providing a window into who I am. I write pretty rapidly and say what I think, occasionally I will go back and add a disclaimer, but I do not change what I wrote. Well I do try to clean up my spelling, but that is about it. Thank you also for your prayers and good wishes! I always appreciate those.

Agreed, be safe. I jump around on your blog and enjoy the tidbits I've read so far. I admit a small amount of envy you were around for the "Golden Age" of OD&D.I got in in 1980, the "Silver Age" if you will ;-)

This has been so weird, I have heard gunfire every night for the last several nights. It is unmistakable. I have also been hearing explosions a few times and I have no idea what is going on there. I do not watch TV so I do not know if there is any coverage on it or not. Growing up on the farm in the 1960s, I was around dynamite quite a bit and my dad made use of it on a number of occasions.
I have also heard other things explode, such as when my youngest brother made black powder for a science project and then spent the summer trying to make it better. My uncle took a metal tube with a half inch wall thickness and welded one end shut with a small hole for a fuse. My brother would put in the fuse and the black powder, stuff a potato in the open end, light it and run. Finally when he set it off a about 500 ft from the house and rattled the windows, mom made him move it another 300 feet from the house. I have recently heard a several explosions that sounded like that only more like 2000 ft away.
He kept refining his technique and then started making black powder fire crackers. When some went off in his hand and burnt his hand (no permanent injury) mom decided that he needed to find something different to work on.

Hearing stuff around here, too. Not gunfire usually, but strange sounds.
I think it's like all the accidents that happen in the rain. It pushes all the "almost" accidents into "it happened" territory. All the stress and fear are pushing people over the edge.

I reside near Rochester, NY. Shootings occur nightly in a city of just over 200,000. Per capita the rate was 10x higher than Chicago back over the 4th of July holiday. Drug related gang activity predominate motivator. No doubt coved related lock down stress a contributing factor. Such a frequent occurance there is a general malaise about it these days.

We are one of the cities that has a mayor who wants to defund the police.
It has quieted done were I am at, but you could not pay me enough to get me to go downtown.

Similar political landscape in our city. No reason to go downtown anymore. Too many business industries moved away, lots of derelict buildings. Used to be an entertainment hub but Covid has put the kibosh on that for the foreseeable future. Just sad. Worst part is my Wife and some friends run a comic con but not this year. Used to use a downtown venue for that.

I hear gunfire around here [semi-rural Sevier County TN] fairly often, but it's just my various inlaws and relatives target practicing in their backyards. My brother did shoot a black bear that tried to come in his window (some years ago now), but that's been the only serious use of firearms anywhere near me.

I'm part of a FB group composed of folk who play various versions of the Twilight:2000 RPG. A recent photo posted there was of several National Guardsmen catching a nap in the Capital building, under the gaze of a marble bust of Lincoln . . . upon the wall cattycorner from which was a plaque commemorating the Union troops who guarded said building during the Civil War.
One hopes the implicit irony becomes no more complete than that.

OP, sorry to hear that man, this is not a good time to be in cities, not for maybe the next 10 years. Only going to get worse.
