In keeping with the current "novels" series of threads, I thought I would comment on books and games and how much I enjoy the linkage. I find that when I read a book and then can look at game materials for the same setting it enhances my enjoyment. Here's a peek at some examples from my shelf.... Amber --books, RPG, tarot deck, fanzine Barsoom -- books, RPGs, wargame Conan -- books, RPGs, board game, movies Cthulhu -- books, RPGs, board games, (I don't have any movies, but they exist) Dresden Files -- books, RPG, tv series, graphic novel Dune -- book, RPG, movie and miniseries, wargame Elric -- books, RPGs, graphic novel, boardgame Game of Thrones -- books, RPG, TV series, (I don't have the boardgame) Lankhmar -- books, board game, graphic novels, RPGs Middle-earth -- books, movies, wargame, several RPGs, lots of background material Solomon Kane -- books, movie, RPG Star Trek -- books, tv series and movies, RPG, board games Star Wars -- book, movie, several RPGs Of course there are a lot of TV series made directly into RPGs (Battlestar Galactica, Supernatural and Smallville come to mind offhand) but I didn't count them because they aren't really book-oriented. I know that some tie-in books may have been written, but mostly later. Just a couple of thoughts on the subject.

This also makes a great reading list and a lot of great inspiration for a game. Also REH gets two mentions on this list. Sweet!

The recently done - 5 years old? - Call of Cthulhu silent film is a thing of beauty!

Dang, I didn't realize it was 10 years old! The film does a very good job of staying close to the source.

The Call of Cthulhu movie is really great - just the fact they made it into a silent movie was amazing! I liked the Whisperer in Darkness movie as well, and I recently bought the German The Colour out of Space movie adaption at a local sci-fi convention, but I haven't seen that yet.

The Colour out of Space is my absolute favorite! I can't believe they made a movie. How could they have? I mean, you cannot film an indescribable color! But I will have to find it now.

I consciously select works that will be an influence on the latest game/campaign in progress. The last game was an Arthurian take on the English Civil War, heavily influenced by Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae, Moorcock's Gloriana and The Warhound and the World's Pain, Penman's The Queen's Man, Bradley's The Mists of Avalon and King Arthur's Bones by the Medieval Murders Group. I'm pretty sure Shakespeare and Milton had an indirect influence but I wasn't looking for it.
I'm often surprised by the extent to which material from outside my selection finds its way in. William Blake has popped up in the world I'm currently designing and he's a perfect fit. A shame it's not an Earth setting - I've been wanting my wizards to buy their grimoires from Blake's of Lambeth since forever. That one might have to be a short story.

Solomon Kane! now that the kind of character a man can get into. Vengeance and the dark side of the psyche, now that is something to sink your teeth into; lawful to a fault and yet somehow flawed, somehow a bit off. Give me a passionate, vengeful "hero" to play and the blood will flow!

That is some good stuff you've mentioned there, I will have to keep on eye on your posts and not miss anything.
