On the topic of Undead making no sounds, something I've always included in my games is the concept that some of them smell quite bad depending on environment. Bloated, maggot-ridden fresh zombies in a swamp setting or damp cellar, for instance. There's no mechanic for detecting odors in OD&D but the old "x out of 6" roll modified to situation works well, and of course Dwarves have very sharp smelling underground so they can sniff out the best ores!

I just check to see if you are upwind or downwind if out of doors. Some dungeon areas have breezes as well.
