So I've gotten a sci-fi bug of late.
I want something that is totally retro: like what those guys on Star Trek Voyager used to play in the holodeck.
I want: ray-guns and tasars and robots saying "danger, Will Robinson," and rocket-ships and radio-units and spy-watches and little green men from mars and radarmen and space ghosts and evil mad scientists with rubbery capes with high collars and just crazy space-opera, space-western, planetary romance gonzo wierdness.
I've downloaded a bunch of stuff that is already out there.
But if you ever made your own campaign supplement (not that I do that kind of thing, I mean, come on, you should just use the stuff that someone else has come up with, right?) what would you name it?
In the poll I have some ideas, but feel free to think outside the box!

I think that RPG names should (1) have rhyme or alliteration, and (2) make use of the ampersand. Based on your details above, how about "Ray Guns & Robots"? It would be fun to come up with a inspirational list of "crazy space-opera, space-western, planetary romance" books, sort of an Appendix N for the topic. A few classics that pop into my head: * John Carter of Mars (Edgar Rice Burroughs) * Lensman (E.E. Doc Smith) * Flash Gordon * Buck Rogers (particularly the TV series) I'm sure there are many more.

Yes, finarvyn, exactly so! What I like about "dungeons and dragons" is that it combines place-where-encounters-will-happen with mythic-beast-most-feared-to-be-encountered. So that is what I was going with, above, with Space Stations and Alien Invasions. But I really like Ray Guns and Robots!

how about "Ray Guns & Robots"? For a more space themed name: Rayguns & Rocket-men

Excellent idea, tetramorph! Have an Exalt! It's great fun coming up with names like this so I'll just throw in some more for good measure! Robots & Rocketeers Monsters & Martians Deep Space Delving Uncanny Space Tales Aliens & Astronauts Planetary Quest Cosmic Encounters Space A.D. Robot Warriors & Rocket Queens Travelogue Gotta pick up the kids from daycare now so I guess I'll have to stop there...

I voted 'other'. Fun post!
Hmm. Space opera in particular. Let's see...
Spaceships & Star Systems Armadas & Empires Planets & Privateers Spacesuits & Hyperdrives
My favorite above so far is Rayguns & Rocketmen
But for me, I probably wouldn't do space opera. I'd just make a personal thing and call it sword & planet, but I'm sure there are 40 of these out there already, heh. Mine would be way more Flash Gordon the movie (because hawk-men and sexy space-princesses are awesome) and very, very little Star Wars. Not intended to be insulting; Just talking out loud here.

You are not insulting and I am right there with you, merctime. That is exactly what I am going for. Pre-60's atomic era raygun gothic retrofuterism is what I am going of here. So Flash Gordon, Tom Swift, Buck Rogers is exactly what I am going for here. I see that as on the cusp b/w planetary romance and space opera. The point being: I don't need game mechanics that are scientifically or technologically accurate. I don't need to know how the atomic drive engine gets me to jupiter in a week anymore than I need to know HOW the magic sword "works." I love your suggestions. These are my favorites: Sword & Planet Spacesuits & Hyperdrives! HERE is my most recent thought: RAYGUNS & RETROROCKETS!

Yep... It seems I didn't read the OP clearly enough. My bad! How about... "Strange Worlds & Space-men" or "Astonishing Tales in Outer-Space"? I love the 'Retrorocket' thing, too... Pretty clever double-meaning EDIT: /thread derail. Here's a NPC group for this game. I'm feeling silly (what else is new?): the Federated Elven Democratic Planetary League, or 'FedPol' for short. hehe. How about a gigantic, space version of the swamp-thing? This guy is so huge he could challenge a star-cruiser. He'd be like encountering a dragon, or a dragon-turtle, or a sea-monster... But in outer space. /End thread derail Cool topic bro

finarvyn, The Red Baron, Necromancer, Admin Pete, merctime and all! Come on back and vote now. I erased the old pole and put up one based upon some of y'all's good suggestions. And if you are still going to do a "write in," please vote "other" so my poll looks cool!

What's the status of this project at the moment, tetramorph? I'm curious, as it sounded really cool, and it also made me thinking about resurrecting my own sci-fi project at some point!

What's the status of this project at the moment, tetramorph? I'm curious, as it sounded really cool, and it also made me thinking about resurrecting my own sci-fi project at some point! Status report: Ray guns & Retrorockets is currently on my permanent core project rotation! I've got about 3 or 4 projects that I work on at a time. O rotate them when I get tired of one. Keeps me fresh. I should have a draft shareable for those interested within the next couple of months, so I will keep you posted. Thanks for asking!
