My "search-fu" is weak so apologies if there are already threads about this. Anyone use ability checks in your games? one of the innovative (to me) ideas is rolling under ability with XD6 seems so intuitive but was never something that I even contemplated back-in-the-day. Easy task roll equal to or under ability with 3D6 (or 2D6?) Difficult check roll 4(or more)D6. I recall some discussions on other boards and even seeing this in an old White Dwarf adventure, just an intuitive idea IMNSHO ;-)

I believe that came from Thieves Guild stuff.

I agree simrion that it is an intuitive idea. We used them from the beginning. Some we rolled 2d6, 3d6, 4d6 or more and some we rolled a 1d20. And yes it was roll under the ability number.

We always used the d20. I like how it punishes those with biased dice

I like how it punishes those with biased dice I have never seen biased dice, They mostly seem to roll as many ones as the do 20s, although they also seem to roll better sometimes for some people than they do for others. Have you had a problem with dice that really are biased?

I only use the clear jewel dice, as I feel that these are the only ones that give fair results. The composite dice are slightly unbalanced.

We always used the d20. I like how it punishes those with biased dice I prefer to use D20 attribute checks roll under, because even if you have an 18 in an attribute there is still a potential for failure.
