AiF, magic, thoughts inspired by it

I have to admit that when I first peeked at AiF, it looked like DnD reskinned with some numbers changed.  I guess I was pretty wrong.

While I like the tone and there are many beautiful things in this work, at the moment I am most taken by the magic system.  The combat rules are intriguing.  Not quite what I would want to run, but I like the approach.  I need to think more on this.

My thoughts are still unformed, but I am wondering if there is a way to use or adapt parts of the magic system for use, say, with the Delving Deeper redaction of OD&D.  

Has anyone done anything like this?

I have not used anything directly, but I have mined it for ideas from time to time.

I think I'm going to take another look at AiF and see if I can come up with any ideas...
