I like to use heraldry in my games; I feel that identifying one's clan or where they come from is important to my NPCs. It also helps with book-keeping as I can list any NPCs that I have under the picture of their clan. During the game, I just describe what their shield or standard looks like. I like lists like this because they also give surnames.
