I love tabletop RPGs, especially the DnD, generally "old-school-ish" variety.
But I have no one to game with and basically no time anyway.
I don't like this situation.
I keep thinking I should make my own town, village, dungeon, even system (not that I know the first thing about design), at least to tinker with and look at on my computer.
But what good would that be?
All the great ideas and evne good or bad ones are out there. They just need to be played.
I don't know.

Well if you go ahead and work on it we can make you a sub-forum to post it all in and you can share it and other people will use your ideas and they will not go to waste. If you go ahead and do it, then later on you can play it when you are not working so hard or even when you retire, us old guys still play when we get the chance. Or work on it and then down the road when you have more time you could run a play by post, if nothing else pops up, what size of city do you live or work in?

There's a decent population around here, but I don't know. I just don't think I will ever have the time slot. But if I get started, maybe I will ask for a sub. Thanks, Perilous!

Well, I guess I've started. I forgot about this thread. Seems like it's been longer than it has.
I feel like I have a ways to go on amassing ideas before I can start to whittle them into a set of adventure hooks and a clear setting or core of setting. But, nothing to do but work on it a day at a time.

Some sixteen months later, here we are. I feel older but can't believe that I've posted even as much as I have here. Thanks to the guys on this thread for the encouragement.

After high school graduation (1991) I games less and less because I was so busy in the Army; I did game a handful of times - tried Vampire: the Masquerade and AD&D 2E - but not much more. After getting out of the Army in 2000 I gamed even less. I did play in a few sessions of 3E but that's about it. Now I have the time but I don't have a group. The one time I tried meetup was a disaster. I do a bit of gaming with my son now. I basically started working on my campaign board here on these boards to get all my old ideas out of my head and into a (somewhat ) coherent state.

You know, looking at this again after all these months, I can say what I should have said back then, all the great ideas and good ideas or bad ones are not all out there. I have seen great ideas and good ideas posted over the last two years from you and others here on the forums, that are new takes on things. But still they need to be played. Writing the ideas down turns out to be easier than playing them. Keep writing. Maybe in the next couple of years we can have our own "con" and get together from all over the country and spend several days gaming together, taking turns running a game.

I have to say, that sounds like a great idea. Exalt. This thread is nearly two years old. Reading these replies and the replies from The Perilous Dreamer and The Semi-Retired Gamer is inspiring in a way. Despite the difficulty of gaming, I think it's still a net good that this forum is here and people come here to discuss, brainstorm, hear stories, and share ideas. Appreciate the check-ins on these old threads. Regarding the notes about the character races, that stuff seemed very important to me as I wrote it, not as the final word on Half-Elves or anything, but because I wanted some distinct races to start with to cleanse but not destroy the palate a little bit. To take a step away from the "usual." Not like there isn't plenty of that around anyway, but to d oit for myself and to see where it might lead.

I would love to able to run a face to face game for you guys, two 6 hour sessions with a break, three days in a row. Give you all pre-gens at 5th, maybe 6th level. By pre-gens, I mean a stack of 20 or so and have you guys dice to see who gets to pick first. Have a couple of non-players hired to record and write up what happens as the game proceeds so a detailed game journal could be posted.

Or even a one-shot to test the waters and the format first. No pressure, of course.

I just about always got stuck DMing so it would be awesome to be able to actually run some characters!!!!

My computer is about 12 years old and with Zoom I can get a picture on the computer but no sound, I also cannot get sound with Discord or with Roll 20. My 5E game we use Roll 20 for the visuals (I am not sure I could use it, I have enough trouble with a character). We do a conference call on our phones. I use a flip phone and can barely get enough volume to hear everyone. Maybe, if things work out, I can upgrade my technology, but it will not be soon unfortunately.
