Bedisde River Troll imageThe River Troll is quite odd. Unknown generally, every troll has a split personality. One peronality is CE and the other is LN. When LN, they can trade rish for silver. When CE they attack ruthlessly. Interestingly, when a group of them is encountered they will all be the same personality 3 HD AC 5 Bite attack for d12 regenerate 1 point a round

I'm going to start detailing of the innes of the village. I just wanted to give everyone a chance before I (as project lead) started work.
If you're wanting to "call dibs" on one of the local businesses? Speak (type?) up and be heard (read)?

I think we should go more generic and don't go to a single ed of D&D, but we should decide what we are going to use as a guidline,. If we are going to use the Murkhill name(which I am in favor of) we should generally use OD&D.

Yes, I referenced that in my initial post. Basically I said OD&D was the baseline for design sensibilities.
Murkhill Forum is primarily aimed at OD&D (and pre-1983 D&D editions) so it seemed a good fit, as did OD&D's basic wide-open philosophy -- imagine it, make up a rule, then try it out. I didn't want to stifle anyone's creativity. Naturally, in the editing process it can all be melded together, so any completely "off the maps" ideas can be toned down a bit.

The Inne of the Laughing Paladin
This building is one of the oldest in town, being built to cater to the trappers and fur-traders. The proprietress, one Bekka Krong, is rumored to be a retired fallen Paladin with a penchant for strong drink and strapping young men. Krong is solidly built and and big as a house, her 18 STR and volatile temper make her a dangerous person to cross. She runs a lively house but will crack the heads of anyone stepping too far out of line; she wants no trouble with Baron Olway.
There is always a not-quite-legal game of chance of one type or another going on in the spacious basement of the inne, these are typically run by Krong's henchman Speks. Speks is an anthropomorphic and rather skinny rabbit a (ahem) hare under 6' tall. Speks uses a monocle and likes wearing loud clothing, typically reds or yellows, and is a sharp-eyed croupier. Frequent players are referred to as basement rats by the staff and regular customers.
The inne proper is a typical open-raftered bench seating type of affair. Krong imports wine and ale from Winsolme and tries to keep a diverse stock, she and Speks also brew ale (rated four stars out of five) in the sub-basement of the inne. The sleeping rooms are cramped but homey and immaculately clean, a suspiciously intelligent flesh golem named Lurch patrols the sleeping area at night with orders to restrain trouble-makers.
Common room sleeping capacity: 20 Luxurious Quarters: 1 Merchants Quarters: 2 Typical Quarters: 6 (two beds per room)

(earlier)
Legends of a deer who's blood can be used to kill a god have circulated for years. The PC's need to hear these stories for a few levels. The tales are all different and confusing."they explode when you kill them" "They are protected by angels"' Nothing can run further" This last one is true.
The Reason
A creature they need to kill is immune to their weapons and the only way they will be able to hurt it is to use Hind blood.Or they want to kill a god or immortal
The Hind
Very little truth about the Hind exists The exact nature of the hind are up to the DM. A few guidelines: High Ac Approx 5 HD No attacks Immune to all weapons Solitary Found in very inhospitable, high mountain terrain super high DX and Con
The Hunt
The hind will lead the party on the grandest foot chase even seen by D&D players. Time it out so the chase starts at the top of your session and runs at least , all game. He will dodge weave jump over crevasse, lead them to monsters, prerend to run in caves. Drag It Out. Image
Oh and did I tell you you can only use a net?

Giant Rabbit
These plus size rodents, from a distance, look very much like deer(same size too). Only if you look closely, do you realize it has a rabbit -like head. Filling the eco niche like a deer, these shy and uncommon creatures are highly sought after by mages. The GR's blood can be used as the main ingredient for potions of haste, flying, jump, expeditious retreat and teleport.

At the south end of town is a huge(100 foot diameter) tree stump. In the center of the stump is crude sign and a large bowel . The sign says" Place 500 gold in bowl to gain entry to the Magick Shoppe". If done as sign says, a dark stairway will open. Descending the 1000 foot stair the group will come to a magic torch lighting a small landing. They are greeted by another sign that says " Stand Perfectly still to be transported"If they go back at this point the bowl will only return 400 gold. after 60 seconds root/ tentacles will curl around them , lifting them up and passing them from tentacle/root to tentacle/ root. The travel about 800 feet and the huge cave opens and is lit by the equivalent of sun light. Seeing a huge cave that stretches out far beyond the light the roof of the cavern is covered by hundreds of writhing root/tentacles.(these tentacles are the security system. " Hi I'm Herbie" says a small imp that appears out of nowhere" Let me tell you about today's specials".

This is still on? I'm going to read this later tonight and try to write something. It certainly is. I’ve not been wanting to dominate the writing, though I’m really tempted to sometimes. I was hoping to make it a real group effort. So, if you have something to contribute? Please do so, I would love to see what you have to add.

Why don't you list out some of the types of shops that you think the village should have as a minimum and that would give people a starting point. Also why don't you go ahead an write up several things and that will give people more of an idea of what they can do. Once you post a few things, then between and mao and hopefully a few others the thread will get more active. Maybe one or two of our blog posters could talk about it on their blog.

The Pig in a Yolk
Specializing in ham omelettes, this inn is known for not accommodating whims or daintiness. For example, its sloppy but sturdy construction has the nicest room overhanging the hog pen so you can smell your breakfast overnight even if you'd rather wait til morning.
The owner is Sull, always wears a wizard's robes but clearly has never studied magic. Seems to have a way with a frying pan ansdcertainly knows how to keep the place running. Despite the many inconveniences of staying there, Sull does a good business with travelers and even some locals who come for breakfast.
Apart from the accommodations and the food itself, another draw is the extreme literacy of Aximus who has an irregular schedule serving drinks in the common room. Adventurers with scrolls or maps in unknown scripts have often found Aximus is able to help when no one else could. Or so you have heard. He doesn't look much like a scholar.
The structure itself looks like a poorly designed mushroom, with upstairs rooms leaning out haphazardly around a thick central stem.

The Visiters
In order for this form of undead to come to "unlife" a sentient must die alone with no friends or family. Then , they must be unclaimed in the afterlife. This forces the soul back to earth and metamorphs into a Visitor. A malevolent undead shadow that attaches itelf to someone who is the opposite, surrounded by friends with loving families.
At first they notice minor strange things happening.A bite will be missing from a piece of fruit, a door is unlocked after they remember locking or misplaced socks. These are all as the Visitor is getting used to their new host. The host radiates both evil and magic and will be detected as such. The host's problem is about to begin. In the second stage of "riding", the undead starts leechig off any healing spell cast on the host, at fist only 1 or 2 points but eventually the whole spell(2-8 weeks into the ride) At the final stage, the Visitor will transfer d3 off any damage the host causes (the host taking the damage instead.) To get rid of the Visitor, the host must self inflict damage until they are near(within 2 points) of deat

Giant Mink 5HD(27HP) AC 3 2 attacks (bite) Damage 3d6
This giant version is about the size of a medium pony.It is by far the most valuable furred creature in the area. Unfortunately it is savage and not shy about ripping adventures to thread. A mommy with young is worse( +5 to hit). The real problem w these is that it is nearly impossible to kill without wreaking the pelt. but the reward is fabulous..
