Hi all, have been lurking for years, but decided to delurk and take up Death Even XIII 's challenge. By the way, where is he? Started with OD&D, played a little Holmes, a little B/X and did not care for AD&D or BECMI, have not tried anything after that. Big fan of deep, dank, dark dungeons. Big fan of blogs, haven't written one, still on the fence about that. I belong to several other forums, but rarely post, but will see about that here. But on to the challenge for August. Welcome aboard, Kujik! I hope you enjoy your stay here.

I just noticed this thread pasted 100,000 page views. The first on the forums to reach that milestone.

It was the first week of my 8th grade year that I was introduced to D&D. I remember ease dropping on a young seventh grade kid babbling on about wanting bone armor for his character but being restricted from wearing it.
I didn't know what the hell he was babbling about, but I was curious about the concept of bone armor.
After asking some pretty stupid questions and still not understanding what the hell a character class, race, and armor restriction was the kid very cautiously allowed me to read a pamphlet out of the white box he had hidden inside his school bag.
The rough drawings and hand printed sheets he had squirreled away between it's pages totally blew my mind.
In that instant I was hooked on a game I knew nothing about, and had never seen played. All I knew was I wanted to know more.
Sadly the scrawny kid snatched back his prescious treasures in fear that their secrets would be stolen, and never allowed me to be apart of his group again.
The sad fact of my youth is growing up dirt ass poor. Two parents working differing shifts just to make ends meet, and to feed their six kids.
It would be another two years until one of my older sisters would marry and I'd have the chance to get my hands on her husband's collection of AD&D books and mods.
When I got my first job at Sixteen, I blew the first big check of fifty bucks on my own box set of Gamma World, and sharp edged dice.
It's a shame kids grow up, learn bad habits with beer, cars, and girls (not always in that order). By the time that phase of your life is over a guy finds himself pushing retirement and looking for some of that childhood he's forgotten.
Over the years I have kept a toe in the water. Playing the random tournament, going to backroom meetings with the odd group of players, buying the latest and greatest update to dungeon crawling.
I reckon this life has been pretty good because not many NPC's last out as many campaigns.
Here's to reading your blogs.

This forum, my blog and my MeWe groups are my main links. I recently started up a new online game (roll 20) game this past weekend (as a player).

Hi to everyone, longtime reader delurking and joining. My friends and I started playing D&D during the summer of 1974. We saw the game in our local FLAGS and thought we would check it out. We mostly played Risk and other board games and had watched a sand table wargame once, so this was a departure from our usual thing. We struggled for a while to figure out how it worked, but once we abandoned Chainmail for combat and went with the "alternative system" things went a lot smoother AND once we got the Blackmoor Supplement with Temple of the Frog things became much more clear. So then we were off and running and since TotF showed us the way we never got into modules. That was really the only thing that the 3LBBs was missing and had Temple of the Frog been included in the 3LBBs, then it would have made getting started easy. Well the "alternative system" should have been presented as the primary means of combat. So that summer I was 21 and my friends and I gamed a lot for about 3 years in our non-work hours. But that dropped off as our dating became more serious and once we started getting married the group gradually fizzled out and our group activities switched to things our wives wanted to do. Well except for deer hunting season. Now that we are all retired, we started getting back into D&D again mostly inspired by reading the Dreamers blog which I found 4 years ago.

What he said, I will add that he does 80%+ of the reffing and I do about 10%, I will let the other guy who is close to 10% speak for himself. The others have tried reffing but did not really get into it.

We just give him a break now and then to catch his breath. Not sure yet if the other guys will sign up or not. We are trying to talk them all into it.
