Someplace yesterday, I saw a post about what is gonzo and that everyone has different definitions. In my opinion gonzo is defined by Dave Arneson's Blackmoor and by Dave Hargrave's Arduin. Hargrave's game was in the spirit of Arneson's game. I have often wondered what we would have if Hargrave had been one of Arneson's group in the Twin Cities and someone else in the group had been privy to their secrets and wrote everything down for them.

To me Gonzo gaming is an "anything goes" kitchen sink adventure or campaign. Arneson was a fan of B-monster flicks and I believe such influenced his adventures. Hargrove shamelessly mixed sci-fi with fantasy, oh and let's not forget his "air sharks" (flying sharks for those not familiar. In the early days it seems DMs & players were less focused on realism and verisimilitude and more interested in exciting adventures and overcoming challenges.

Gonzo is stepping over The Twilite Zone and moving into mescaline , skirting the edge of Blade Runner, The Tick and Heavy Metal(movie),

I agree with this post as i've always been drawn to settings that defied the norm - Wilderlands with its colored skin "humans", RIFTS that mixed fantasy, sci-fi & horror elements, plus Tekumel and Talislanta. My settings always drew from my interests in independent fantasy comics, video games and fantasy/sci-fi art. Battle Chasers is a perfect encapsulation of the Hargrave style from the magic powered tech, sentient War Golem (which predated both Eberron's Warforged & Warmachine/Iron Kingdoms Warjacks), flying Strata Ray (hybrid of a flying hammerhead shark and manta ray), magic powered clockwork items and even more sci-fi likearmor and technology among the border guards. I love that stuff. I am just trying to figure out how it'll manifest in my revisions for my core setting.

Gonzo is something that is difficult for me to properly define but I know it when I see it.

For me, gonzo includes the material in the section of the 1e DMG titled THE ONGOING CAMPAIGN, which includes conversion rules from Boot Hill and Gamma World into AD&D - that is, gonzo includes going outside of "medieval" fantasy, and even swords and sorcery and sword and planet, into the full range of adventurous fiction and the settings wherein those adventures occur.

All the more reason I wish I'd gotten introduced to the hobby with OD&D rather than AD&D.
Though I wouldn't give up the 2e campaign settings for anything.

Almost forgot: Gonzo is a fixation on chickens, blue fur, an umbrella handle for a nose, and hanging around with Kermit D. Frog.

I'd say you're dating yourself, if it weren't that I do remember when SNL was funny. When it was NBC's SL. When Laugh-In was funny. And when Ernie Kovacs was inspiring them all.
Only thing saving me from comedy curmudgeonness has been Studio C these past 9 years, which is why I'm following 'em to their new studio of JK.
