Ok, 3.x has a little innovation to gaming. It is the idea of spontaneous casting. This is where the cleric may substitute a healing spell for any other spell of the same level. This makes every cleric a heal bot as well as being able to cast dif spells.

3x has lots of innovations, it just seems overly complex and specific for me to really understand it. In my own game (2e), I don't define clerical magic as spells, but as praying. Mages had to study spells to take with them, but I never made clerics do this. The 2e system was pretty crazy with all of the different spheres, it was a good idea but in my opinion it just didn't work. This is actually one of the reasons why I dislike the Paladin class, it stole the thunder of how I envision Clerics, not as white clad medics, but as holy warriors of the faith who are able to preform miracles. They aren't priests, they are the defenders of the faith; that to me is different.

Why do you want to steal clerics? They're not that hard to come by are they?

I didn't know that was there, he must have done that back before he started the forum. Down in the pbp game that is on hiatus at this link ruinsofmurkhill.proboards.com/post/19277 is his latest version of that, in addition to the clericial paladins he added a dwarven paladin too.

It started in 2.x with Dark Sun and Player's Option, but I'm gonna go with the idea that different spellcasting classes follow different spellcasting rules-- Wizard versus Sorcerer, spontenous channeling Cleric, and later we got the Warlock and Dragonfire Adept.
Biggest thing I am stealing for my retrowhatever is that how Mages and Priests learn and cast spells is different from each other, and incorporates elements of prepared, spontaneous, and at-will casting.

There are no deities in Dark Sun. Every Cleric worships one of the four Elemental Powers, which determines their Sphere Access and their Granted Powers; there are (originally) four Specialty Priests that replace the OG Cleric, Druids have a different arrangement with Nature, and Templars get their powers from the Sorcerer-Kings.
The big thing, though, is that in Dark Sun the Priest classes don't defile the land with their magic, but the Mage classes do. They are actually entirely different kinds of magic besides different spell lists.

I will have to look into Dark Sun.
