A Sane way to play Magic the Gathering
First off a warning: Magic is addicting once you get into it. Stick to this method and spend only the reasonable amount of money suggested.
Magic cards can be bought very cheaply if you stick to the commons and uncommons. Grab bags of cards can be bought super cheaply on line, ebay and Troll and Toad have all sorts of commons ( about 2000 for $20 or so. Large Land purchases(required for game) can be purchased from the same places, you will need at least a 3:1 ratio of cards to land. Get about $40 or so (as high as $80). now here is the key to playing this way.Have ONE person make the decks and get the cards and make the decks, have every one pitch in for the cards. Actually what my group did was I bought all the cards and built all the decks. When building the decks you need only make 40 card decks and as you will get lots of duplicates, ignore the deck building restrictions. Play group games only and this will 99% of the time make the decks even powered

The DM
Cards make for terrific inspiration. Creature cards make both good monsters and visuals for NPCs. Equipment cards can be used for magic items. A few spell cards make great illustrations for magical effects(not so many of these thou.). Land cards make great illustrations of buildings forests and cities and towns.
In Game
You can mimic the real world card game as a game within the game, cards can be worth gold(w some super rare cards worth a fortune and gambling can be simulated by playing games. Battles can be simulated with either games played or the cards Themselves can be used as miniatures.

Interesting, i'd like to see where you go with this. I think that Magic the Gathering could be an inspirational tool for a OD&D setting of inter-dimensional travel with either a magic-user focus or general adventuring party. Each themed set could inform a mini-setting but with a linked cosmology. You can take the 5e MtG mini-settings and upcoming Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica coming out in November as inspiration as well.

I am considering posting links to images on cards for monster Ideas, saving on the space.

Not my cup of tea but it is a novel way to convert MTG players over to roleplaying.

Not my cup of tea but it is a novel way to convert MTG players over to roleplaying. Yeah, I had not thought of it in that light.
