Hey, I swear that that is one of my maps! We play in almost exactly the same way, except I make my own random encounter lists which I sometimes roll against or ignore if I'm bored of combat. I think that we are a rare breed, secretsofblackmoor. I especially like that you show off your ugly map; that is just a tool that we use to keep our lies straight-ish.

I actually think a lot of people probably do this, but they just won't admit it. I am pretty sure both Arneson and Gygax talked about A-B switching, as in the fun part is here. but they went over there.... but, oh look the fun is here now! I personally do not understand the whole thing about buying pre-made and only playing pre-made. It seems like a very product centric approach.

That's not cheating, that is the normal standard everyday way of doing things. If anything should be called cheating (the answer to that is no) then using modules would be cheating. A lot of people (our founder was one) sit down with little or nothing prepared and go for 8-10-12 hours on the fly with no hesitation and the player never know or care that you didn't spend weeks or months preparing all of that. The players draw the map and you make it up as you go. The dungeon comes into existence as you describe it to them and as they draw it for you. You number and date the sheets of paper as they are drawn, stick a north point on it and note what sheet is next to what sheet, all during play.

I can't do huge sessions anymore. 4 hours is my limit and then I am not having fun anymore.

Yeah, I can't do those long games anymore, I was in a 24 hour game once with lots of caffeine, that was fun to do once.

It's a bit different for me now that I am just a couple years past 14 when I found the game. No more slumber parties where the players are thinking, if we can play another 6 hours I'll make 4th level in one session.

I know that several of us on here have never run a module and don't intend to. I don't move things around, if I have ruins off to the southwest and the players go northeast, I don't take those ruins and move them to where the players are. There will be something new and different where the players are.

I don't move things around, if I have ruins off to the southwest and the players go northeast, I don't take those ruins and move them to where the players are. There will be something new and different where the players are. Everyone is comfortable, or not comfortable with certain ways of doing things. I totally get it. Some of these ideas aren't necessarily new either. I have a group of players that beg me to run a game. Often because I am busy working on things I can't. Or, someone has work, or wife, or kids, so they end up missing a session. So I have changed my entire approach to how I DM based on wanting to do intense games with almost zero prep. Part of this is again due to prep time and the other half is because I may not game again for a week to 2 months. I merely want to suggest something to those who may have not considered other options, for how they can cut corners and still keep their players happy. Another thing about this is that I now realize that I was bored with RPG's, partly because I was phoning it in. I find my new style has made playing more refreshing for me as a ref, I am having more fun. My advice is to just try it out and see how it effects your game, merely as an experiment.

I am rather offended with the How to Cheat part, It should have IMO been titled How NOT to Cheat.

One of my fav tricks was creating puzzles where I don't know how to solve it. I just waited until I liked what they had thought of and then I said , Eureka! 37 years and nobody ever had a clue.
