The idea is a spell point system that as the mage casts spells, his magic gets weaker. Here www.princecon.org/downloads/conbooks/conbook40.pdf is a link to an excellent spell point system (page 73). I'll give you a min to look it up Ok the pc mage would use their spell point system chart at 2 levels above his level. Each time he casts a spell he losses a level on the chart. You can monkey with what level he starts at. So for his first 2 spells he casts will be more powerful than he is entitled to.

I like the idea, goes from fresh and strong to tireder and weaker. Yea ripx187 is on to something, if it wasn't for my love of all things Vancian , I would switch to this.
