My favourite gaming resource is the Fantasy Name Generator. I love almost all of the creative aspects of the game, but when it comes to thinking of lots of names quickly, I'm at a loss. This website is can generate historical names based off of specific cultures, names for magic stuff, names for places. It is an amazing and helpful database that is easy to use and free.

ERB and Mark Twain.
There are no coincidences so outlandish that they cannot be major plot points.

ERB and Mark Twain. There are no coincidences so outlandish that they cannot be major plot points.
Basic ERB Barsoom storyline: something bad happens to Dejah Thoris or, if not her, one of the few women on Barsoom pretty enough to be in the same room with the incomparable one.
John Carter (or Vad Varo, Carthoris, etc.) journeys to a bizarre milieu to find her and almost rescues her, but something goes wrong and the situation gets worse.
Another stunningly beautiful woman falls in love with John Carter and helps him escape ...
... or a disaffected follower of John Carter's captor helps him escape because of John Carter's kindness to him ...
... or redshirts do something mind-numbingly stupid and John Carter escapes.
Adventures, with a lot of swordplay.
John Carter almost escapes but watches his friends sail away to safety as he fights off hordes of spear carriers and finally gets overwhelmed.
As above, John Carter escapes.
Unfortunately, he only runs into even greater danger in an even more bizarre milieu.
There, he learns the incomparable Dejah Thoris is also there and is to be wed to the big bad evil chieftain.
John Carter escapes (as above), rescues Dejah Thoris, returning to Helium amid much rejoicing from hoi polloi.

Jules Verne and H. G. Wells and Edgar Allan Poe
Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before. Edgar Allan Poe
“The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins?”
― Edgar Allan Poe
“Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night. In their gray visions they obtain glimpses of eternity, and thrill, in waking, to find that they have been upon the verge of the great secret. In snatches, they learn something of the wisdom which is of good, and more of the mere knowledge which is of evil.”
― Edgar Allan Poe
“To die laughing must be the most glorious of all glorious deaths!”
― Edgar Allan Poe

...Thats funny, I end up not even giving names, I m terrible about that I have learned not to waste my time so much doing this. You can come up with an amazing name for a man-at-arms, but the players are always just going to remember, 'that sword guy', so why bother. The only time that we really use proper names is during mysteries, other than that I go for the names which the PCs decide to call them. I mean, I still have to know, but I make notes about if the players click with an NPC or not, and what they call them. Sometimes, if I'm really lucky, then I can pick the nickname for the NPC, but that is rare.

I try to give the NPCs, at least the significant ones, a personality along with a good name (i.e. pronounceable). I don't deliberately set out to give them a unique "voice", but I find that after I give them a personality, the "voice" just comes along and I automatically drop into it without even thinking about it. So my favorite resource is my improvisational talents.

I'm a graduate in history, so I have read many historical essays. Some books are really useful for getting inspiration. Sometimes reality is more extraordinary than fantasy. I like the archaeologic divulgative texts with maps, exhibits and drawings inside. I found these old italian book (1927), inside there is an ancient Pompei city map. A great inspiration material for an abandoned place like the city in "The Hall of the Dead" by Robert E. Howard.

People, people are unpredictable and everything someone says, leads to a string of ideas that leads to something usable.

People, people are unpredictable and everything someone says, leads to a string of ideas that leads to something usable. So true. And another thing comes to my mind. I do not know if it happens to you too. I happen to look at people and think about NPCs . In particular when watching tv shows, I notice movements, ways of speaking, that I try to replicate for my NPCs.

For me, its The Metamorphica. Its a rule-neutral list of mutations/super-powers, with lots of tables and procedures for creating exotic character types (aliens, mutants, superheroes, aberrant monsters, demons, etc.).
Petty Gods is also full of strange goodies for a derange pantheon.
