So I came up with the below for when I am trying to describe a treasure by more than just gp value, while still rolling the random TT in M&T and U&WA.
I imagine myself most of the time letting the players roll for treasures they find and not going for big description. But every now and then (say, once per level) I like to place a treasure that I have described in more detail and that they have to take the time to go get appraised.
DESCRIBING TREASURE: GEMS AND JEWELRY
I just want some help with description and jewelry is not something for which I have much of an imagination!
Let me know what you think.

Where the heck did you get that big old list from, Admin Pete? Wow. But how would you dice it? I just gathered it up at one point. I would pick out 20 or 40 that you like the most and make two 1-20 lists or any variation that you want. One short list or many short lists. Use as little or as much as you want. Or perhaps you have a list of 1-10 or 1-12 for each country or region.

Great, great resource. Thanks to both of you. Maybe I'll use tetramorph's system the next time Pelham finds gems or jewellery.

Guys, this stuff is super-great! Tetra, over at OD&D74, I was going to offer some simple advice (the tables in the AD&D DMG and those in the ready ref sheets, as someone already mentioned Courtney Cambell's phenomenal treasure pdf)... but it seems you've worked out your own solution!
