Ok so I had minis for an Ancient game called Legion so I decided to use my barbarians and my buddy played Rome. My Barbarians had no armor Great Swords and a special damage ability.so we decide on a point value and start the game. My buddy attacks w some archers and asks what AC am I, I say 10, thn he looks at me funny. We realized because of the hue bonus you get for AC 10 in the point system , i really should have using TWENTY TIMES AS MANY TROOPS AS HIM (something around this number). He said we surrender and we had a good Laff!

I'm lost here, you are saying that armorless Barbarians "AC 10" get such a huge defensive bonus in Swords & Spells that it is not worth shooting arrows at unarmored men? And if the barbarians are getting a huge bonus why do you need 20 times as many as you had? I am not following you here.

I'm sorry I still don't understand why the Romans are surrendering. Because the way the point work, you actually get points for AC 10, so if you did the math right , I got 20 to !, so I would have just eaten him alive

Not to mention that you said you should have had 20 times as many troops but you didn't and if you have such an advantage why would you need more troops?

Low AC in the game gives you points instaed of costing anything, I also believe Orc are given a bonus for being an orc, worst war game Ive ever seen

Swords & Spells is a great title, sounds like a retro clone title.

I thought it was just supposed to be an update that cleaned up Chainmail some? From what I rememmber it ws very D&D like I finally had a look at Swords and Spells recently, and while I've never used any part of it for anything, it really does feel like Chainmail re-done through the lens of D&D. It seems pretty cool overall, if a little dated. Like, Chainmail had its "Fantasy Supplement," but Swords & Spells is what happened when the fantasy supplement took over the entire system. There's a lot of little bits that I like, like on page 18: I don't know if there's anything like this in Chainmail or in other wargames of this type, I just like the idea a lot. Also the morale levels a couple pages later. A particularly lovely bit is the diagram on page 36. Just the unit and terrain types themselves: Unicorn Cavalry (concealed), light brush, Pikemen, Orc Spearmen, Warg / Goblin Cavalry, Manticores, Fire Giants, Sub. Commander Necromancer. With prior establishment of these types of creatures in-world, I can see how something like this could be extremely immersive and suggestive of a real fantasy world where these creatures represent impossibly real forces that are right there on the battlefield with Men.
