What are your favorite published TSR campaign settings & why? Also do you prefer to use the core Box Set alone or including supplements?
My initial favorite TSR campaign setting I loved was the Forgotten Realms as it was the first one I bought, though I had a soft spot for it up until 4e was published & ruined it for me. There will always be a part of me that loves it, but only the 1e Gray Box. I'd rather build off that core & make the setting my own if I ever ran campaigns in it.
Secondly, I'd have to say I have a soft spot for the Known World as it was the second setting I bought via TSR's GAZ series. Though as I got older I began to have issues with how the various cultures were based on real world cultures & placed willy-nilly without rhyme nor reason.
Though technically part of the Forgotten Realms I really like the Al Qadim setting, as I've always had an interest in Near Eastern cultures to one degree or another. Plus it was one of the few 2e AD&D TSR settings that didn't feel over done and ticked all the boxes for me, but unfortunately none of my friends wanted to play in the setting.
Though I also liked the Kara Tur setting, it was another one that didn't appeal to my friends growing up; plus by that time we were exploring Palladium Fantasy, Shadowrun & Cyberspece RPGs.
So ultimately my favorite TSR setting is Greyhawk, it was the setting I ran my year+ 5e D&D campaign in. Though I liked much of the later supplements, especially the Scarlet Brotherhood supplement & Paizo's the Savage Tide Adventure Path's setting of Sassarine; I now prefer the 1980 Greyhawk Folio sans the Dragon Magazine articles. The reason for this is that I don't care for the stuff that was later added to the 1983 Greyhawk Box Set, especially the racial costumes - which seemed odd. The only things I cared for were the expanded deities for the human cultures; but even that has grown bloated - I'd rather use the original pantheon of 19 deities Gary created for the setting in general and expand upon that list with my own. That said, I might include the Touv Pantheon but replace the Aztec based Olman Pantheon as part of my expanded Greyhawk pantheon. If I ever run a Greyhawk campaign I want it to be my own & I'll likely redraw the map of the Flanaess based on those in the GH Folio.
Honorable mention for me is the Birthright setting, though I disliked the whole regency & domain play, I loved the actual setting & cover art on most of the supplements. But by then I had moved onto other games & pretty much was on my way to spending nearly a decade not playing or running RPGs though I still continued to buy them.
