Is BTILC a better D&D film than any of the three licensed D&D films?
A powerful enemy manipulating hordes of evil underlings.
A trio of his lieutenants, each of a threat in their own right, who must be overcome to get to the boss.
A city encounter.
A plot which must be uncovered.
A disparate group of adventurers, including "spear carriers," on a dungeon crawl.
Magic spells, magic "buffs," magic potions.
Monsters, most of a type we've never encountered before.

MOST movies are better D&D films than the first D&D movie. Because of that first one, I've not seen the other two and sometimes I wonder if anyone else has.

Most anything is a better D&D movie than the D&D movies. The recent King Arthur was a better D&D movie.

I’ ve seen them. I actually own them on DVD. The first was schizophrenic (is it a drama? comedy? action film?). The second was better, much better, but barely a B movie. The third was boobz had little to recommend boobz it, and was darker in tone than the other two.

Everything by Ray Harryhausen was better than almost anything else by anybody.

Everything by Ray Harryhausen was better than almost anything else by anybody. Now we're getting somewhere. As long as you include Willis O'Brien and Merian Cooper in that package.

And there was a beholder-like guardian in the movie too!

Thunder: Who?
Jack Burton: Jack Burton. *Me*!

Being better than the D&D movies is not setting the bar very high.

I can't disagree, though I wish I could. I was hoping the rumored Paramount D&D movie might finally make a splash, but it alternates between being not talked about at all or having its projected release date pushed back yet again. This time until 2021 and the one actor who did appear on the IMDb page is no longer listed.

I think that they should Joe Maganiello spear head this and maybe recruit and a few actors who play it in real life to play roles in it and if the script is engaging and fun it should work out.

I agree, add to the mix: Kate Beckinsale, Milla Jovovich, Jason Momoa, Rhona Mitra, Lee-Anne Liebenberg, Stephen Lang, Craig Conway, Sean Pertwee & Karl Urban.

Going back to the 2021 D&D film currently stuck in development hell. The attached director Rob Letterman's curriculum vitae seems to be comedic children's movies. And most of those are animated, only two listed are live action. I'm not one to prejudge a film until at least a good full-length trailer is out but I'll say this. I won't go see a slapstick, wacky, screwball D&D adventure film. I'm simply not interested. Leave that to the Dead Gentlemen Productions outfit who make humorous D&D films that are funny without being derisive.

I did like the anime inspired by it, though some of the animation was spotty at times.

I am surprised that the producers won't tap Joe Maganiello to be a part of the project, as I know he is passionate about D&D and wants a good D&D film; plus he has pull with fans based on both his Mad Mike & True Blood shows. They need to get a director that understands action and drama not a comedy guy. If they go that route it'll be a flop, D&D and fantasy fans want a serious but fun film not more trash. This all said, I'd love to see a serious anime be made buy Studio Madhouse or by Studio Bones, begin with a OVA and if popular have a series made as a US-Japan co-production, tap some of the voice talent behind Critical Role and maybe put Matthew Mercer on the writing staff.

Whoever makes it should sit down and watch or preferably play in a real old school game with a good ref and about a hundred hours of an exploration style game. I would love to run that game with a writer and a picked group of players around them.

Vin Diesel already did a great D&D movie - it is called The Chronicles of Riddick...
“You keep what you kill.”

Vin Diesel already did a great D&D movie - it is called The Chronicles of Riddick... “You keep what you kill.” Don't remember seeing it, nor any reference to it. Must google it, unless it was rated R or worse. I even skip a lot of PG-13s - too many good movies to see before I die, and at the prices of snacks (never mind the ticket prices) I choose carefully. Heck, not all movie houses are disable-friendly, so I get very picky. Which has nothing to do with anything, but I'm extra cranky today.

The Chronicles of Riddick sells it self as SF, but it is really science fantasy. The last fight between Riddick and the Evil Overlord of,the Necromonga (sp) was like fighting an opponent with some kind of super Haste spell cast,on him. The last shot is a fine homage to the King Conan painting...

Which King Conan painting? (Dang lots of formerly-Conan paintings seem to have turned generically-named around 1980.)

Here is a good Vin Diesel Movie for Mr YoYo.
The Pacifier PG The Last Witch Hunter PG-13 The original script was my guess the better script before it got re-written by DW Harper and rewritten again by Melisa Wallack. I enjoyed it, but I am in the minority.
